The reason is that a scientist found a connection between a touch of the stuff in drinking water and the disappearnace of cancerous tu morsin rats. You see the reason for excite ment. In its ransacking of the chemical world for anything use ful against cancer, had science overlooked one of the most com monplace of compounds, that un stable molecule of two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms which everyone knows by its cor rect chemical name, hydrogen peroxide: ; - Dr. R. A. Holman gave rats a 0.45 per cent solution, which is a very weak solution, of it in lieu of their drinking water. Experimental- cancers had been trans planted into them, and these can cers regressed and some disap peared. No sooner had Holman revealed this startling result than other scientists were repeating the experiment. . Two have reported that they did not get his result, that, in fact. the ygot no result at all. The tu mors in their rats continued to grow, whether the drinking water was pure or tinged with hydrogen peroxide. This meant one of two Wings. Either there was a factor in the original experiment which Holman had failed to take into Former Resident To Be Buried Here Word has been received here of the death of Hattie Stillwell Rich ards, 92 of Arapahol, Neb. Mrs. Richard died in Lexington, Neb. Dec. 12. ' Graveside services will be held at the Island City Cemetery Thursday, at 2 p.m. The Rever end Gene Robinson will officiate. Dempsey-Snodgrass Funeral chap el is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Richards was born in Olive, Mich., March 16, 1866 and had been a resident of Arapohol, Neb. for 25 years. She had liv ed in La Grande for 32 years from 1900 to 1932. Survivors include two broth ers Zach and John Chandler of La Grande nnd several nieces and nephews. Death Reported Here James Clark of The Dalles, about 58, a frequent visitor in this area, died yesterday in a The Dalles hoSpital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. .Thursday in The Dalles. Survivors include his sister-in-law, Mrs. Opal Gilmore of Un ion. Wool is different from ordinary hair in that it has tiny scales on its surface that overlap each other. A Yule fAl HASpcHARAC-VT 5C'S)7cOMIWG RIGHT ) I I Observer, La Grande, Ore., account and which brought about his result, or the would-be repeat ers hadn't repeated precisely. That put the question on a dead center until Dr. Lester Hankin, biochemist at the Connecticut Ag ricultural Expermental Station, New .Haven, experimented with the same weak solution of hydro gen peroxide but in non-cancerous and perfectly normal weanling rats, so far as the eye could tell. His first finding was that wean lings whose only drinking water had a little of the compqund in it, drank much less water than those. -whose water was un doctored. At the end of three weeks, they weighed less they had failed to grow at the usual Missile Man Par Of SAC OFFUTT AFB, Neb (UPI) That space-age soldier, the "mis sile man." has been with the Strategic Air Command for near ly a year now. His coming has put a brand new face on the air arm of America's defense. SAC's mission is still to main tain the mighty bomber force aimed at discouraging attack on the United States, a bomber force large enough to wipe out much of Russia. Meanwhile, a glistening and powerful complement of missiles has been added to SAC's array of potential weapons. SAC's job is to train and maintain crews to fire the intercontinental and intermed iate ballistic missiles.' Construction was begun at Fran cis E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., to prepare it as the nation's first ICBM base. Other launching sites were marked off around Of futt, Faiichild AFB, Wash., and Forbes AFB., Kan. Lowry AFB, Colo., became a Titan ICBM base and Prewque Isle AFB, Maine, was planned as the home of a squadron of Snark ICBM's. yandenberg AFB, Calif., look on British Royal Air Force crews for training in operating the Atlas ICBM and the Department of De fense shipped a supply of the suc cessful missiles to England. And defense officials flew to Italy re cently to discuss deployment of an unannounced IRBM there. Other U. S. launching sites will be set up as the SAC missile ar senal continues to grow. Multnomah County Man Heads Judges Group PORTLAND (UPI) Circuit Judge Paul R. Harris of Multno mah county Saturday was elected president of the Circuit Judges Association of Oregon at the group's annual meeting here. Named vice president was Judge Charles H. Foster of Lake view. Judge Robert C. Belloni, Myrtle Point, was elected secretary-treasurer. tide Story Toes., Dec. 16, 1958 Page. 4 rate for baby rats. Yet their in ternal organs were unaffected. He took another group of wean lings and limited them to the re duced amount of water which the doctored - water rats had con sumed. These weanlings were con stantly seeking more water during the three weeks. In a further ex periment, he showed that pro longed drinking of the hydrogen peroxide solution in no way af fected the reproductive capacity of female ra.ts. Thus, Hankin showed that hy, drogen peroxide does something in the animal body but left the questions of what and how for further experiments to unravel. The tests of weanlings and fe males were of particular interest. Weanlings are deeply involved' with growing and so are reprodu cing females. The most spectacu lar - phenomenon of cancer is growth wild, uncontrolled growth. r ....... Hydrogen peroxide is only one oxygen atom away from being wa ter, which is hydrogen oxide or H-2-0 as every high school stu dent knows. But hydrogen perox-'' ide is eager to get rid of its oxy gen and oxygen is a basic ele' ment in bodily function. That's why these experiments which are so inconclusive must be taken seriously.
