TION; Calif. (UPI) An experi
mental transport plane, with a
itevtflutionary tilt wing for verti
cal takeoffs and landings, was un
veiled Monday by Hillpr Aircraft
Corporation.
The 1614 ton, twin-engine craft,
desfgnated the X-18 "Propcllo
plane" by the Air Force, is sched
uled for its first flight in April,
1959. ,
The X-18 combines the vertical
ascending, descending and hover
ing characteristics of a helicopter
with the inflight capabilities of a
convention aircraft," according
to a spokesman for Miller. 1
The Palo Alto, Calif., firm is
primarily a helicopter manufactu
rer.' '
The transport utilizes the Alli
son turboprop engines developing
a total equivalent of 11,070 shaft
horsepower with counterrotating
blades and a Westinghouso turbo
jet in the after portion of the
fuselage.
Hiller engineers demonstrated
the revolutionary wing, which
tilts from conventional position to
nearly 90 degrees. With the wing
in the maximum position, the air
craft will rise vertically with full
load.
General specifications: wingspan
43 feet (60 feet with extensions).
length 63 feet, height 24 feet, 8
inches. Performance and payload
data were not disclosed.
School's Third
Floor Condemned

floor of Ashland Junior high
school was condemned as a fire
hazard Tuesday by the deputy
state fire marshal and classes
. were dismissed temporarily at
the, 55-year-old three-story struc

The third floor of the building
was' condemned by W. P. Roble,
i Salem, who had been summoned
by Ashland Fire Chief Charles
David after a group pt parents
made the request. The action was
a direct result of the Chicago
- school fire disaster last week,
school officials said. .
School Superintendent Stanley
Jobe said the school will be per
mitted to use the two lower floors
of the building. This will mean
- rescheduling of classes and the
possibiiily of double shifts, he
' said. Studies will be resumed as
;t soon as classes can be revamped,
., he added.
School officials said that the old

Do-Good Hospital Visitor Sometimes Bad Medicine

NEW YORK (UPI) The do
good visitor to the hospital some
times is bad medicine for the pa
tient.
1 bring this up because statis
tically about 23 million persons
are hospitalized annually, which
means many more times that to
tal in visitors, and because hav
ing illness in my own family re
cently, there has been ample time
to observe visitors and their bed
side manners.
This column is meant to be
written with kindliness, and with
the desire to help both the pa
tient and the visitor.
Sure. Call on the hospitalized
patient. He or she welcomes com
pany, unless the doctor orders
otherwise and the "no visitors"
sign is out. My personal observa
tion is that a little company does
a lot to brighten a long day.
But don't be one of those types
who doctors tell me are inevitable
in the hospital room.
There's the long-faced visitor,
who already has buried the pa
tient although thel ucky soul is
being dismissed tomorrow. An
other is the long-staying visitor,
who apparently figures as long as
he's doing his good deed, he
might as well make it for the
whole day,
Or, the bubbly, nolhing-gets-mc-down
visitor whose presence prob
ably is an asset at a cocktail par
ty but sometimes is more than
a sick person can take. Strike a
happy medium in cheerfulness.
1 often wonder what the patient,
who has to be confined, thinks
when a visitor remarks, "Boy
docs that bed look good. I could
use some of the rest you're get
ting." Or, the reaction of the pa
tienti to the visitor who says,
"You look better than I expect
ed." or, "You look worse than I

There also. is the "I told you
so" visitor, who reminds the pa
tient that if he had listened to
good ole Charley this illness could
have been prevented. And there
is finally, I've noticed, the "well
my doctor says" visitor, who's

patient's illness because she has
talked it over with her own phy
sician. "I wish the visitor would quit
comparing ailments." one prom
inent New York physician told
me when we were discussing this
subject. "And above all quit giv
ing free advice. This is the worst
of all and may undermine the pa
tient's faith in his own doctor."
Blue Cross, the hospital insur
ance plan, with the aid of physi
cians has compiled a chart for
us visitors. It includes these sug
gestions to those who would speed
the patient's recovery..
No more than two visitors in
the room at a lime.
Make your visits as brief as
possible. A cheerful 15 minutes
are ample.
Be calm, cheerful and opti
mistic. Avoid all exciting, disturb
ing subjects.
Don't sit or lean on the bed.
If you have a cold, don't pay
a visit.
Speak quietly, walk quietly,
laugh quietly. Rest and quiet are
major contributions to recovery.
If the patient is critically ill,
only members of the immediate

family should visit.
Don't deluge the patient with
flowers all at once. Space them
out, if the illness is long. Books,
magazines and games also often
are welcome.
Don't bring food, unless
doctor or nurse approves.

oxygen is used, positively no
smoking.
Blue Cross said hospitals have
their individual regulations on
permitting children to visit, but
that a pretty good rule is, no chil
dren under 13 permitted.
