UPI Hollywood Corriondnt
HOLLYWOOD (UPI). Old
movie stars don't just fade away.
They slide from stardom to fea
tured roles, then to ' character
parts and finally bit , parts.
AJice White, who made her
screen test for Charlie Chaplin in
the silent days, was a bouncy,
temperamental star during the
la,te 20s and 30s. She was typical
of her era colorful, fun - loving
and carefree. Alice was a big
name and had a large following.
Next week she will be playing
a maid in a segment of the Ann
Sothern TV show.
" Sitting in the Brown Derby Res
taurant, Alice looked back - over
the years and said I wasn't a
real madcap."
,. ''I just married the wrong
guys three of 'em," '., she said.
"Now it all seems like one great
big dream."
Alice, still perky and charming,
wore white gloves and i a blue
polkadot dress. She looks younger
than her 50-pIus' years. . '
"They used to have my picture
on the wall here," she said; peer
ing at he famed caricatures that
line the Derby's walls, "but I
guess tliey gave it the, deep six
long ago."
Alice was called "Peter Rab
bit" when she was a 15-year-old
secretary on the old Chaplin lot.
Her screen test was a fluke. She
was shoved in front of the cam
era to test a new lens. But her
the

biswigs and her nrur
launenca.
"I only made one silent picture
'Sea Tiecr' with Minn cm.
but people think of me now as a
pioneer in suems, she said. "It
hasn't helped.
"Whenever the name Alice
White is mentioned, they say 'oh
yes, wheel her in.' Seven years
ago, when I made my last pic
ture (Time of Your Life), I rent
ed a wheel chair and a guy in
a white coat to push me onto the
set. It broke everybody up.
"At this rate they'll be calling
Shirely Temple an old bag in a
couple of years."
For those with long memories,
Alice starred in "Harold Teen,"
"The Private Life of Helen of
Troy," "Playing Around,"
"Naughty Baby," "Broadway Ba
bies," "Hot Stuff" and "Picture
Snatcher."
Now that she's looking for mov
ie roles again, Alice is having
rough sledding. Many of her for
mer friends and co-workers avoid
her like the plague.
; "Some of them run from me as
if I wanted to borrow money,"
she pouted.
"I never made a great deal of
money, and I lost a lot on the
stock market, but I'm not desti
tute. Strangely, I don't miss the
hoopla and popularity of being a
big star. But I do miss the loot."

natural resources development.
Private firms, the Oregon Farm
Bureau Federation and the Port
land Chamber of Commerce criti
cized the proposal.

Oregon Gov.-elect Mark Hatfield
said he endorsed the general con
cept of such a corporation. The
Oregon State Grange also said it
supported the regional power cor
poration concept.
Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.), a
co-sponsor of the bill, submitted a
statement calling for full river
basin development.
Neuberger indicated he thought
the bill was a good one although
it might be amended before it
reaches Congress. He said such a
corporation would aid in assuring
continuity of financing, planning
and power supply.
, Portland General Electric Co.
and Pacific Power & Light Co.
objected to the proposal. PGE
said it was afraid the bill would
fix another governmental level in
the Northwest and give the pro
posed corporation a u t o n o mous
control over power development.
Pacific Power & Light said if the
bill were enacted as drawn it
would mean a "sudden stoppage"
of the record investments by util
ity groups ot the region.
The Northwest Public Power
Association said the proposed bill
was ' born of necessity", to inv
prove the present administrative
and financing machinery of the
federal Columbia River power
system.

Boy Confesses
Setting Fire
STOCKTON. Calif. ' (UPI) A
10-year-old boy has confessed set
ting fire in the library of the Jef
ferson Elomcntary School a few
minutes before 611 students were
to start classes.
Fire Chief Lyle Stevenson said
the fire would have been, "disas
trous" had it not been controlled
almost immediately. He estimated
the damage at $500. ' , "
The fire was brought under con
trol at 8:54 a.m.' Monday. Classes
start at 9 a.m. '
The boy said he had made five
different attempts to set the li
brary afire. In one of them, he
put crumpled paper between the
pages of an open-faced dictionary
and touched a match to the paper.
He denied the recent Chicago
school fire had caused him to act
as he did.
Stevenson said the boy was found
because a class paper with' his
name on it was found in the li
brary.
The boy confessed after under
going questioning for two and one
half hours. Asked why lie did not
confess sooner, he said:','
"I was afraid my teacher would
be mad at me." .
