School Needs
Told At PTA
The Greenwood PTA held a regu
lar meeting Friday, Nov. 21, in the
auditorium, with Mrs. Nolan Young
presiding.
Mrs. Mary Gray gave the invoca
tion ar.d the flag salute was led
by Mrs. Young. She then intro
duced and welcomed the school
board members, Les toiler and
Charles Reynolds Jr.
Mrs. Gertrude Murphy, a mem
ber of the Citizens Committee to
study La Grande school conditions,
introduced Henry Bates, who gave
a report on the survey made by
the State Fire Marshal, on Green
wood school. He named some 15
major changes that would have to
be made before the building would
pass as safe. A - few of these
changes included enclosing the
furnace room, installation of fire
doors, and new safe enclosed fire
escapes.
Mrs. Murphy then introduced
Walt Parker who gave a report
on the findings of the electrical
engineer. This report showed that
practically all new wiring should
be done throughout the building.
Lren' Blanchard, principal Jack
Rye, teacher; and Les Keffer, as
member of the county reorganiza
tion committee, explained the two
plans of reorganization now under
consideration. Plan one would put
the entire' Union' County into one
school district, and plan two-would
have four separate districts.
Room count was won by Jack
Rye's sixth grade, with 2d mem
bers present.
After the meeting, refreshments
were served by the third grade
mothers. ,
"Daddy Night9
Set At Central
Invitations are being sent via the
girl students of Central school,
to their fathers, for the "Daddy
Date Night." The event will take
place on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7:30
p.m., in the Multi-purpose room of
Central school. .
This will be- an evening , for
'daddies' and their daughters to
take part in dancing, games and
refreshments. ' .
All fathers of girls attending
Central school are being invited to
attend this special party, spon
sored by the PTA.

Holiday Dinner
Planned By Club
The La Grande Garden Club will
hold their traditional turkey dinner
on Friday, Dec. 5, at 1 o clock,
at the clubhouse.!. ;
Mrs. Mamie Bradburn and Mrs.
Fred Sommer are co-chairmen for
the dinner party. The turkey will
be furnished by the club, and the
members will provide the potluck
to go with it. A gift exchange; not
to exceed a dollar, will be held.

A local couple. Mrs. Marjorie

ceremony in the Richardson par
lor of the First Presbyterian
church, Nov. 16.
The vows were exchange be

WED RECENTLY Miss Judy Alane Berryman, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Joe I. Berryman, of La Grande, became the bride of
Duane B. Varney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bercier, of Yacolt,
Wash. The ceremony was performed in Vancouver 'by Judge
Walter Collens, on Nov. 21. The bride is a graduate of La Grande
High School.

Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Fleshman
were hosts for the past week to a
variety of visitors. Those visit
ing included a daughter, Mrs. R. R.
Rdhland, of Citrus, Calif.; a son,
George, his wife, Dorothy and

of Salem; Mr; Freshman's sisters,
Mrs. Delia Nelson, and Mrs. Mary

Annual Dinner
There were over 40 persons at
tending the traditional community
Thanksgiving Dinner, held at the
Blue Mountain Grange hall on
Thanksgiving Day.
The dinner tables were set wth
a large" variety of foods including
chicken, meatloaf, dressing, vege
tables, salads, breads, relishes,
and cranberries. Then came the
desserts, a large assortment 1 of
cakes, pies, cookies and fruit
salads.
The afternoon was spent with
those wishing to, playing different
games and others visiting or sew
ing. 4
Many stayed for the afternoon
and again attended a supper of
left , overs, before returning to
their homes.

Birthday Fete
Crystal Rebekah lodge will hold
its semi-annual birthday . dinner
Wednesday evening, in the dining
room of the Odd Fellows temple.
Mrs. Areta Halsey is chairman
of the dinner and has announced
that honorees will be all those
members having birthdays from
July to January and they are asked
to just bring their own table ser
vice. Hostesses for the event will
be the other members of the lodge
and they will each bring a potluck
dish and their own table service.
Meat will be furnished.
Dinner will be served at 6:15 and
lodge will follow at 7:30 in the
lodge hall.

Appointed Judge
Mrs. Lee Reynolds of La Grande
was honored last week when she
was appointed one of three judges
to name the top piano players at
a Boise Valley Musician contest
held at Boise, Idaho.
The contest, held over the
Thanksgiving holiday, was to
select the top musicians in the
valley to play with the Boise
Symphony Orchestra this winter.
Mrs. Reynolds said she was
"amazed" at the caliber of musi
cians that appeared in the contest.

! Union School Carnival
Features Talent Show
UNION (Special) A large crowd
was out to witness and participate
in the Annual Union High school
Carnival Tuesday evening.
Niles Marten, the MC for the
evening, announced the numbers
on the Talent Show which com
menced at 7 o'clock. The first
number was Patsy' Hutchinson
singing "Smoke Gets in Your
Eyes" and "Autumn Leaves ac
companied by Mrs. Lowell Hutch
inson.
A skit was then presented by the
freshman class. Connie Ballard
sang the song "Stop Teasing Me,"
The sophomore class gave a skit
on TV. Wayne Elliot sang and
played on his guitar "Come Back"
and "Rumble Boogie." Eliada
Baldridge and Terry Miller did a
dance to the song, Mexican Hat
Rock."
The junior class presented the
skit '"This Is Your Life." They
gave some of the high lights in the
life of William Phillips, one of the
best loved teachers in Union High.
The senior class gave a skit on
the record "Matt Drillon." The
final number was a barber shop
quartet, including four Union High
teachers, Andy .Anderson, Ted
Brown, Wilbur Osterloh, and Ed
Johnson.

the many games such as cork

The big moment of the night
came at 9:;30 when the Queen
candidates were escorted to the
stage, Chcryll Spain and escort
Stanley Wilde, Carolyn Vickers and
escort Holt Hibbert, Rosemary
Zaugg and escort Steve Batenian,
Nancy Gilkinson and escort Bob
Cockrcll.
Each candidate was presented
a corsage by the Student Body
Secretary, Nita McClellan. Richard
Ban-, Student Body President
then announced that the 1958 Car
nival Queen was Rosemary Zaugg.
Queen Rosemary thanked all who
made it possible for her to have
his honor and asked everyone to
enjoy the Carnival. She then
awarded the clock radio to Mnrlenc
Turner.
The rest of the evening was
spent in Carnival fun and ended at
a late hour with many people still
playing games.
