have again been given bad news by the Air Force. Investigating
a record 1,270 saucer reports during a 13-month period ending
July 31, it lists the statistics shown in sketch above. Natural

the bulk of the sightings as far as the Air Force was concerned.
Reports on another 14 per cent were too sketchy to permit

Gas Official Tells FPC
Merger Means
WASHINGTON (UPD The
Federal Power Commission 1 was
told Monday that merger of El Pa
so Natural Gas Co. and Pacific
Northwest Pipeline Corp.' would
provide western consumers with
gas- at prices cheaper than either
company could charge independ
dently. .
The statement was made by
Ray C. Fish, former head of Pa
civic Northwest, as the commis
sion resumed for one day a hear
ing on the proposed merger. El
Paso Natural owns 99 per ,cent
of , Pacific Northwest's stock, but
cannot, formally take over the
corporation without FPC approval.
Fish testified that El Paso's
ownership of Pacific Northwest
"already had prevented substan
tial rate increases" because Pac
ific Northwest, without its El Paso
tie, would have been forced to ap
ply for higher rates. i ; '
"These would Rave been sub
stantially larger than those asked
for by Pacific Northwest after its
stock was acquired by El Paso,"
Fish said: Fit-h, now chairman of
the Fish Engineering Corp., was
principal organizer of Pacific
Northwest. .
"And if that had not proved
enough." he added, "we were pre
pared to file for a further rate in
crease." Fish said that - Pacific North

Mysterious Stains
On Houses Disturb
Salem Residents -
SALEM i UP!) Mysterious
staine on houses in the south
Salem area have disturbed resi
dents who plan to start pelitions
going. . .
Mrs. Robert Dormsen, one of
the petition's sponsors,1 said the,
petition links both the. black stain
and also "unbearable odors" to
Oregon Pulp and Paper Company..
But Karl Heinlein, manager, of
Oregon Pulp, denied that there
had been any recent change- in
the mill operation that could
cause I he black splotches which
have hit .virtually all wood-walled
homes and business buildings in
the infested area.
Petitioners hope to present their
case to the city council Nov. 6
and get it referred to the State
Air Pollution Committee.
Heinlein said there .was some
odor coming from a slough near
the plant but said it .was caused
by decaying vegetation, not by,
mill discharge. . ; . , , ,
