La Grande, Ore., Backstairs At By MERRIMAN SMITH United Prest International WASHINGTON lUPD Back stairs at the White House: , What would President Eisenhow er like to have for his 68th birth day Tuesday? Not what you'd think, He doesn't need, golf clubs, automobiles, wrist watches or fish ing tackle. But he certainly could do with some fried eggs or pos sibly a Boston cream pie. Alas, these simple gifts for a man who has two of everything, are as far beyond his reach as a new Thunderbird for the average-teen-ager. From all outward indications, the President has well recovered from, his 1955 heart attack, but lis is reminded of that frightening period every time he sits down to a meal. To keep liis weight down, fried and rich foods are completely out. His doctor, Maj. Gen. Howard McC. Snyder doesn't mind , if his famous patient goes on an occa sional dietary "binge." Snyder, however, knows as does any physician, that most "patients who must stay away from cer tain types of food are generally happier if they stay completely away, and "cheat" on their diets occasionally by- eating ; larger amounts of accepted foods. Warden,' George Goodman said "racial difficulty" led. to the out break, that involved, about' 15 in mates in the recreation yard for "troublemakers." Most of them were injured! , . The warden said all convicts who took part in the fist-and-stone fight were being questioned in an effort to pin. down the killer of Willard Jones, 28, of Philadelphia. Jones was stabbed with a wea pon consisting of two pieces of small steel rod, tied together with shoelaces. The weapon was thrown oyer the prison wall and was re covered outside. George Stolz, 29, of Glendale. N.Y., was shot in the leg by a guard when he tried to climb over a gate in the inner prison yard. During the past weekend with the chief executive at Camp David in the Maryland mountains, Jones played so many long hours of bridge that he developed what seemed to be the symptoms of a real back ailment. He confided at the Gettysburg Country Club that because of tho circumstances, he could hardly blame his pain on the long after noon and evening sessions at the card table. This could be the dilemma of any presidential guest. One simply does not quit any form of joint activity with a president until the chief executive, himself, calls it quits. This goes for leaving tho table, leavng a room or leaving a party. ' 1 And the next day on the golf course, Jrtnes worked out his back soreness, but faced still-another hazard. -"And now," he said as he left the Gettysburg course with the President's, party, "I'll have the pleasure of hearing George Allen complain about his golf game all the way back to Camp David." Whether the President is play ing golf lit Gettysburg or Palm Springs, any key member of the White House stafk-and presuma bly the, Cabinet can, pick) up a telephone" and determine Eisen hower's exact position; whether he's puttings teeing off and rolling down the fairway in his blue elec tric cart, ' , ! : . This is possible because the Secret Service and the, Signal Corps report by shortwave radio every few minutes on the Presi dent's location. -This, information goes to. one central point, where there's always an agent or officer stationed by . a telephone cut di rectly into the White House switchboard. r : Thus the President theoretically couldbe reached at any moment, but in , practicality, he is rarely disturbed on the golf course un less there has been a world-shaking development of which he must be informed instantly.
