' "Monty" dropped into retirement recently after 60 years'; service in Britain's officer corps. His last years ..of duty ,were ,as a deputy to the supreme commander of CJtfATQ. forces in Europe. Montgomery became the center of dispute when .it was , alleged, again and again, that he persued a ,f,ar too .cautious course in the Allied drive through Fi;a.nce in the summer of 194-1. It was .charged that, he fell badly behind schedule in .th,e taking of objectives assigned to him. In his defense .hp .claims it .a,lways was his intent to hold his .area as ,a; bnstiQn ;to attract German tank units so American .armies .could swing Around the Nazi flank and d,ash to Paris and beyond. Some support -for this notion was given by the tJ. S., commander, General Eisenhower, and his chief .of s.tnff, G.eri. .Walter Bedell Smith. But the, criticism :on this and other .counts ,Jyis' never died. , 'ijfet .there is no controversy over what "Monty" achiey.ed in ..the North African desert against the highly .touted iGerman Af rika JCorps under famed General Jtommol. -Until he took command of British armies there, the desert ,cunpa.igns had not gone well for the West. True, Jlpmmcl .more than , once was pushed back into libya jfrom .western Egypt, but he always thrust back. In .his ,mpst .threatening .offensive, he drove to El Alamein, a bate -SO miles from . the vital British naval base. at Alexandria. ' "There he was halted, and sought time for a new build up. -But there also, "Monty" took over to begin, cqunter- preparntions. He prepared well. ' ; On .Oct. 28, 1942, "Monty" struck. Punching surprise holes in Rommel's lines, he then :bi!ought up tank forces (for fbitter, decisive battles on a series of ridges. After days Of bloody combat, British tanks crushed the enemy. 'Ttie.V .burst through and .within hours were racing 40 milrs behind Rommel's lines. CtTiereupon began a headlong Nazi retreat clear across ,the desert past the Libyan .capital of Tripoli; Eventually "Monty" pushed into Tunisia and with American forces coming from the West wiped out the Nazis in Africa. it was a great campaign and a great victory. And it was the first major Allied triumph of the war a turn ing of the tide. 1 ' ' Whatever the rest ,of "Mopty's" story, that chapter is a book jri itself. , ' Footnotes fPlmi-n iiun'f nuinli ,-mnt in u l-ivn nt n- llint ,tti.h it-ttnm'ii- ! tion of growing youngsters ought to have it as tough as.the ones which went bqfore. But there's such a thing as making life too easy. ' Probably millions of American families have heard that old one from their elders about how grandfather slogged five miles to school through storm and blizzard. ' Jf we have gotten away from that, it's most likely a good thing. A kid shouldn't have to hold a card in the JSxplorers' Club to prove his -developing .manhood. et on the other hand kids still have two legs nnd it doesn't hurt them, to walk to school so long as it isn't a long-distance hike. Shane MacCarthy, director pf the President's Council on Youth Fitness, was talking pretty good .sense when he advised parents to quit chauffeur ing their kids on all trips beyond the back yard. Instead of mothers' "car pools," how about some youngsters' "walk pools"?
