Drivers Grow

teen-age drivers licenses, the Au
tomobile Legal Assn. reported to-.
day.
An ALA survey disclosed the
following restrictions as result of
the high accident and death rate
of younger drivers:
New York state issues a jun
ior license which allows driving
accompanied by a licensed oper
ator, and which bans driving in
New York City.
-Tennessee restricts young
drivers to the immediate neighbor
hood in which they live.
Oklahoma lets them drive be
tween home and school only.
Maryland licensed teen-agers
only when the applicant can fur
nish a certificate of insurance
showing that he personally has
coverage of $10,000 to $20,000 for
personal injury and $5,000 proper
ty; damage. He must then keep
this coverage in force until he
is 21.
Idaho restricts youngsters to
daylight driving.
Arkansas makes the parents
of those under 18 sign the appli
cation making them financially re
sponsible for the minor's obliga

that construction of Ice Harbor
Dam, first of a series of four on
the lower Snake River, will bring
eventual navigation of the Snake
to Lewiston, Idaho.
The 1EWA asserted that it was
conducting a "factual campaign"
and that it work had helped
bring appropriations for construc
tion of Ice Harbor and the plan
ning of Lower Monumental, Little
Goose and Lower Granite dams

WASHINGTON (UPD Presi
dent Eisenhower assured a roused
Senate Friday that no federal mon
ey has been or will be spent on a
study of possible U.S. surrender. to
an enemy in event of nuclear war.
He issued a statement declaring
that the idea of such a project
is "nonsense."., -
The President's reaction to the
uproar which rocked the Senate
Thursday was outlined to news
men in a statement read by White
House Press Secretary James C.
Hagerty.
"As far as the President is con
cerned," Hagerty said, "All this
talk about surrender is nonsense."
The press secretary added:
"Let me set the record straight.
There has been no public money
spent to study, how or when the
United States might surrender:
There will be no such money
spent for such a purpose.
"The Senate evidently feels
about this as does the President.
It wants to require that no ap
propriation be used for such u
purpose.
"As to that, the President
wants me to say this: Even if he
is given the money for such o
purpose, it would not be spent.
The whole matter is too ridicul
ous for comment."
