tor the coronation gown of "Miss
Wool" of 1959. . The style of this
gown, she said, will reflect the
Mary Carter fashion concept for
the coming season. It will com
bine the three important key
notes: gracefulness, mobility, and
emphasis on fabric-to-line affinity.
"The wool fabric used in the
coronation gown is literally
handkerchieM'ight in weight and
is used the way I feel all fash
ion fabric must be utilized today
in direct relation to every line
and detail of the silhouette. The
almost gossamer-light material
lends itself easily to draping the
delicate detail and, in this case,
to a swirling skirt made from
many yards of fabric.
"It could, indeed," said the
well-known designer, "be expres
sed beautfuliy in a dra'maticidly
pure line or high-banded em
pire sheath. I Jiave shaped the
tabic, however, to a tilted silhou
ette one that fpllows our new
fashion edict toward a more dis
tinctive look of feminity plus
18th century elegance.
"I feel strongly that the coro
nation gown for the representa
live of the American wool indus
try should be 'portrait pretty',"
said Miss Carter. "I am particu
larly pleased to be the designer
chosen to make this fashion in a
year that demands all high fash
ion evening wear be directed to
the 'portraiture' pretty, look."

Summer Ideal Time To Diet
By ALICIA HART
, NEA Beauty Editor
Summer is the ideal time to
start a diet. Hot weather plays
hob with the appetite anyway
and makes it a natural to switch
from starchy or fat foods to cool
salads, lean meat and cottage
cheese.
This doesn't moan you should
starve yourself. It does mean
three carefully planned, well-balanced
meals a day on which you
can lose pounds.
Be careful to avoid the poor
habit of soft drinks day in and
day out. And don't snack be
tween meals, thus ruining the
sound meals that will give you
both health and beauty. If you
want something in midmorning or
afternoon, have a glass of fruit
juice or an apple.
Avoid strenuous exercise and
sunning in the heat of the day.
fjtick to tennis, if you play it, in
the cool of morning or afternoon.
And remember that swimming
is an excellent all-round exercise
one that will firm the muscles
as you shed pounds
Most of us strip down to the
essentials in clothing during hot
weather. On weekends or vaca
tions, we can go without stock
ings, wear sun back or sleeveless
dresses or shorts
But in doing so, we must be
careful not to present a picture
which is .unattractive to others.
The large derriere and short
shorts were never meant for each
other. The halter top and rolls
of flesh do not get along well. A
sun back dress and masses of
large freckles do not make a pret
ty picture.
So when you buy summer cloth
es, look very carefully before
you choose. Comfort is import
ant but it doesn't come before
every other consideration.
It's easy to form poor habits
about color. Since black is prac-
it. And thereby we rob ourselves
and others of the pleasure of
vivid color.
Every wardrobe needs some
black, true. But every wardrobe
needs violet and blue, green and
sold, pale pink and beige. You
don't even need to be daring
about color to include it in your
wardrobe.
A good way to get started on
switching from black to colors
is to pick out a dress that you
like in black, then ask to see it
in blue or green or beige.
You'll be surprised how others
will notice the change. And
you'll find that it's fun to switch
from color to color.
Look Who's Here
When planning .to redecorate a
room, stick to a simple color,
scheme, especially if decorating on
a budget. Plan to .have one bold
style note to add character to the
room. If this style note is easily
washable, it will be worth a little
extra money. It sets off a room
tical, many of us tend to live in yet is not expensive to maintain.
