But scientist Vladimir, Yazdov-
sky cautioned a fascinated .audi
ence at the International Geophys
ical Assembly that there still are
many complex questions to be re
solved before the first man can
safely reach the moon or stars
or even leave our atmosphere.
One of these questions is how
deadly are the cosmic rays which
some .scientists say can cause
cancer. Yazdovsky did not men
tion these in his otherwise exhaus
tive report and, although other
scientists were curious, none of
them at this well-mannered con
gress is probing subjects which
East or West are obviously re
luctant to discuss.
Yazdovsky detailed the history
of Russia's experiments with dogs
in ordinary rocket flights from
which they parachuted safely af
terwards. Some dogs made 'as
many as three trips hundreds of
miles into the skies.
- "Ten animals were selected for
final laboratory training," Yazdov
sky said, "and from these we
chose Laika, a female two years
old and weighing six kilograms
(12 pounds)."
On his historic day, Laika was
so placed that as the mighty three
stage rocket which provelled Sput
nik II into orbit at a fantastic
speed and with deafening noise
from its motors, the dog took the
takeoff impaci mainly on her
chest and back. Her heart beat
tripled and her rate of breathing
was three or four times normal,
but as Sputnik reached Its orbit
these tended to return to normal.
Yazdovsky said Laika took the
takeoff and orbiting "quite well."
Then began seven days in a state
of weightlessness which had been
one of the questions intriguing
scientists. No human had ever ex
perienced more than a few min-
futos in this state of freedom from
gravity.

Chamber Group'
Says Wages Don't
Measure Income
WASHINGTON (UPD The U.S.
Chamber of Commerce says
wages arc no longer an accurate
measure of a worker's income nor
of an employer's cost of doing
business. The reason: "fringe"
benefits have become major
items in the worker's receipt
from his boss.
Dr. Emerson P. Schmidt, direc
tor of economic research for the
chamber, said a survey showed
average fringe benefits totaled
$981 in 1957 compared to $162 in
1955. He said the survey included
1.020 firms and was the
'most
complete of its kind."

frame house, which she rented for
$70 a month and valued al $13,-
750, the officers, part of a posse
of 10, found where Mrs. Pucket
hid her hardware two loaded
rifles.
When a black and white sher
iff's patrol car pulled up in front
of the house, the officers passed
the rifles out the window to a
waiting lavman, handed Mrs. Puc
ket a writ, and signaled for the
earth-moving equipment.
In a matter of minutes, the
house was flatter than the bottom
of a skillet, and a mailer to be
argued over in an evaluation
hearing coming up in a couple of
months. . .
Mrs.Puckett, Texas-born widow
of a Los Angeles police officer,
was put out at the "sneaky" way
she was tricked,
"The idea of sneaking into my
house and telling me they were
newspaper people leaves me kind
of sick," said the 51-year-old prop-
cerly owner.- "It was clever, all
light, but sneaky, too."

Paper Bag Plant
To Be Built In
Oregon City

Monday thai-the firm will open a
paper bag plant here.

and general manager said neces
sary preparations are already
underway in modifying the Third
St. addition of the old Oregon City
Woolen Mill building to house the
paper bag setup.
Kraft bags, used in most gro
cery stores, will be manufactured.
Robinson revealed.
The plant will be a major addi
tion. Robinson said, to the com
pany's production of newsprint,
wrapping paper, fruit wrap, toilet
tissue and other specialty items.
The operation is expected to
employ about 25 persons when the
plant begins operation in a few
months.
Yantis said Gillispie was driving
a truek-semi trailer which appar
ently came off a hill at excessive
speed and was unable to negoti
ate a curve. The youth died at
the scene of the accident at 5:20
am. about 20 minute-:, aftor the

Before shaving his locks Ernie
spent a month studying baldies in
the gambling rooms at Las Vegas.
"I was appearing in a show up
there." he explained. "And I al
most had my nose punched more
than onee when I'd sneak up be
hind some innocent black-jack
player to study the shape of his
scalp.
"It takes two hours a day to
shave my head, and at first I was
terribly self-conscious. I wore a
cap to conceal my nakedness, but
the cellophane liner felt like a
cold, wet fish. Then I was wor
ried that my hair- wouldn't grow
back.
"We tried to insure it for 2 mil
lion dollars, but no takers.
"Columbia Studios gave me five
days off recently and it "grew in
pretty fast. 1 figure it will take
about a month to got back to nor- .
mal."

copper shares brought stocks down
in the late trading today.
A cut in copper metal prices
brought a decline into that group
and adversely affected other sec
tors of the market.
Copper shares late in the day
registered losses ranging to more
than 2 points in Kcnnccott and
Anaconda. Aluminum issues also
fell with losses there ranging to
more than a point.
