Tribute to
Many Distinguished Vistors Honored at
Meeting of Hope Chapter. Eastern Star
Joseph Lyman Spencer,
pharmacist mate second class,
stationed in the Solomon is
lands area. He is the 211-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Char
les Spencer of Iji (irande.
Spencer attended elementary
school at Liberty school, high
school in La (irande, and was
a student at Kastcrn Oregon
college when he entered the
service in February, 1943.

'zon and duty as occupation
troops in Japan is Pfc. Alvin W.
Campbell, whose wife resides at
1105 Eleventh street, La Cininde.
Campbell was inducted into the
service of his country Oct. 4,
1944, and left the United States
in March, 1!)45, arriving on Lu
zon May 5, in time to participate
in the late stages of that difficult
campaign.
He was awarded the Bron.c
Star medal for heroic action un
der fire and also wears the com
bat infantryman's badge, Asiatic
Pacific ribbon with one star and
the Philippine libernton ribbon
with one star.
More than 150 members of Or
der of Eastern Star were pres
ent last night for the meeting of
Hope chapter at the Masonic tern
pie here as distinguished guests
were accorded the highest of Star
honors, that of being "escorted
to the East."

cipal speech of the evening. Re
ports of the grand chapter meet
ing at Portland were heard. At
this meeting, Hazel Graham, for

elevated to the worthy grand ma

the Fir Street Methodist church
held a business meeting last
evening In the church parlors, In
the absence of the president, Eva
Dougherty, Mrs. William Elam
conducted the session.
Plans were completed for the
father-son banquet. The date was
set for Oct. 30 at 0:30 p. m. In
the basement of the church.
Mis. Edith Sweet presented the
lesson last night on "Women in

Typhoon in Tokyo
69 Dead, Many Hurt
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 1 1 (UP)
A typhoon which has deluged
Tokyo with rain for the past three
days left 69 known dead, 128
houses destroyed, 81 bridges
washed out and nearly 1,000 acres
of land flooded In central and
southern Honshu, a broadcast
quoting the Japanese home min
istry said today.

Members of St. Mary's Altar
society completed plans for the
"Get-Acquainted" party for new
women of the parish when they
met yesterday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. Julius Roesch.
The party, to be on the Hallo
we'en theme, will be at 8 p.m.
Oct. 24, in the Neighborhood club
house. Mrs. Maurice Beck, Mrs.
Arnold Gerber and Mrs. Tom
Wallsinger, jr., will be the host
esses. Mrs. Clarence Becker will
be In charge of the entertain
ment. After the business session yes
terday afternoon, the hostess ser
ved refreshments to the group.

nurses of Eastern Oregon college
in the Sacajawca hotel.
Barbara Shafer of Cheyenne,

Cassie DeCourscy of The Dalles
was chosen secretary - treasurer
of the hall.
Sixty cadet nurses are now
being housed at the Sacajawea
hotel by Eastern Oregon college
through the courtesy of the hotel
management.

Legion Auxiliary
Hears Reports of
Plans for Future
Members of the American Le
gion auxiliary met last evening
in the small ballroom of the Saca
jawea hotel for the regular
monthly meeting. Mrs. George
T i s s, president, conducted the
business.
Committee reports were heard
on the coming conference here
Oct. 24; on national defense; on
Americanism; war activities; and
membership. It was announced
that for rehabilitation in hospit
als, the local auxiliary had re
newed subscriptions to Readers
Digest and Colliers for the Rose
burg hospital and the local pa
per will be sent to McCaw, Port
land and Roseburg hospitals.
Fifteen dollars was voted to
the Christmas Cheer fun, and $10
to the war chest drive. It was de
cided to increase the poppy order
to 4,000.'
On Oct. 15, the group will take
food to the Do-Nut hut and on
Nov. 1 the sewing club will meet
in the Neighborhood club house.
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. E. G. Moore and Mrs. Otis
Palmer, assisted by their com
mittee. The table was spread
with a pastel green linen cloth
and decorated with lighted tapers
in crystal holders and a center
piece of huge marigolds.

Escaped Man Fails
To End Own Life
EUGENE, Oct. 11 (UP) Wal
ter Lee McFee, 211, escaped con
vict, today awaited return to San
Quentin prison after twice failing
in suicide attempts.
McFee slashed his wrists twice
in the Lane county jail yester
day, county officials reported.
The convict -was arrested near
Junction City, Calif., in an auto
mobile registered to the U. S.
department of agriculture and
used by the Klamath district for
est service at Yreka, Calif.
It would take just ,14 minutes
for the tremors of a Tokyo earth
quake to travel through" the earth
and record themselves on insfru
