Here, far up in the Blue mountains, is the decking yard of the Mt. Em
ily Lumber company. Located near Starkey, these yards when the picture
above was taken, held upwards of 2,500,000 board feet of lu mber in the
pine logs which were piled and ready to be loaded on freight cars for the
trip to the Mt. Emily mill here. The crane which loads the logs on the cars
is shown in action in the right foreground of the picture. At left are tre
mendous piles of logs which will soon be turned into 1 umber for thou
sands of uses. When one considers this yard is that of only one of the
major companies operating in the country, it is easy to see how lumber is
one of the major industries of the valley. The huge stands of Pondcrosa
pine which cover many of the mountain sides in the Grande Rondc area
contribute not only to the beauty but to the wealth of the valley. Taken
from an airplane above the yards, th'e camera captured in the photo some
of the breadth and depth which are characteristic of the mountains and of
the work which goes on there.
