for Lewis Titus, former icsident

Monday. He had lived In the val
ley many years and has 10 broth
ers and sisters.
He leaves also his wife, Allie;
three sons, Clifford, Ernest und
Cedric of Marsing, Ida.; three
daughters, Mrs. Edith Schencks,
The Dalles; Mrs. Lilah Pederson,
San Francisco; and A 1 d a Mae
Golzh, Mineral Water, Tex.; and
nieces and nephews.
His niece, Mrs. Hershal Halsey,
and Mis. A. E. Peeblor went to
Caldwell today for the funeral.

ACCIDENT Automobile
driven by Delmer Howell, La
Grande, and bicycle riden by
Junior Sedar, La Grande, collid
ed Tuesday afternoon at Fourth
street and N avenue. Police re
ports say Howell signaled for a
right turn as young Sedar was
passing him on the right side.
Sedar didn't see the signal, and
Howell didn't see the boy. In
the resulting accident, no one was
injured, police reports show, but
the bicycle was damaged at on
estimated $10.
Chief Motor Machnlsls Mate .
Howard L. Cantrell,
who won the ship's pool of $160
bet on time of arrival, arrived
yesterday at Seattle for discharge
from the U. S. naval reserve. Ho
ntered the service in September,
11142, and served 18 months in the
south Pacific. He participated in
the invasions of the Aleutians,
the Palaus, and Anguaras with
the GROPAC unit, and was hos
pitalized for three months, before
being sent back from the Caro
lines. He attended local schools,
and graduated from high school
in 11K12. His wife went to Seattle

R. R. Ragsdale, has been honor
ably discharged fiom the navy
after three years and eigni unu
a half months service.
He served 38 months on the
USS Maryland, mostly in me
south Pacific, and has seven bat
tle stars for Tarawa, Kawajalein,
Palau, Saipan, the invasion ol
Loyte, the sea battle of Leyte
and Okinawa. He wears ribbons
for American defense, Asiatic
Pacific theater, Philippines, third
fleet and good conduct.
Before entering the service in
January, 1042, he was a student
at Eastern Oregon college. With
his wife he is now residing in the
Stalcup apartments. He plans to
go into the insurance business
with his father. Mrs. Kagsuaie
has bern instructor of physical
education in the Ontario schools
for the past three and a half
years.
Ted Roy to Open
Voice Studio Here
Opening of the Ted Roy Vocal
Studios in La Grande has been
announced.
Roy, well-known throughout
eastern Oregon, has had a studio
in Pendleton for the past eight
years.
He was graduated in voice
from Oregon State college, and
was the winner in the 1927 na
tional Atwater-Kent radio audi
tion, with $2,000 and a two-year
voice scholarship as prizes. He
studied in New York and Phila
delphia Under Horatio Connell,
Purley Dunn Aldrich, and Oscar
Seagle.
He gave concerts in Canada
and the Pacific northwest, giving
a number of concerts in La
Grande.
Roy was also leading soloist for
two years on the Shell Ship of
Joy program, and was staff tenor
for the National Broadcasting
company in San Francisco for
four years. He was a member of
the Knickerbocker quartet. ;

Freight Probe
WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (UP)
Chairman Burton K. Wheeler,
d., Mont., of the senate interstate
commerce committee, today ask
ed' the interstate commerce com
mission to investigate the class
freight rate structure in the
mountain and Pacific coast states.
In a letter to ICC Chairman
John L. Rogers, Wheeler pointed
out that because of the present
class rates in the area it is "ex-
sible, to establish manufacturing
enterprises near the production
of the raw materials.
Wheeler asked that the ICC ex
pand its present study of south
ern lates to take in the western
area.

are some general questions from
newly-returned veterans and
their. .relatives:, ,'. .
Q. I have been in the army two
years and just returned from Eu
rope. I expect to be back in civil
ians clothes very soon and have
a job promised me with the city
where I live. To get this job, how
ever, I just discovered I have to
be a registered voter in the city.
Although I have lived in the Unit
ed Slates many years I was not
an American citizen before I
went into the army. They tell me
I have to produce citizenship pa
pers to become a registered voter.
I say that being in the U. S. army
makes me a citizen automatical
ly. Is this right?
A. No. Being in the U. S. army
does not automatically make you
an American citizen. There are
several very simple procedures,
however, by which you can get
citizenship as a result of having
been in the service.
Q. I have just come back from
overseas and after looking around
am afraid there isn't much chance
of getting a job without a lot of
training. Just what will the gov
ernment do for me in the way of
this so-called "vocational rehab
ilitation?" 1 was wounded and
partly disabled.
A. You can receive up to four
years' training in any field that
you select in order to make your
self fit for any job which will
support you.
Q. 1 have been discharged from
the army and am working at my
old job. Somehow things seem
different. 1 think I might want
to go to school or get some other
training for a different job. How
long do I have to get into this gov
ernment training?
A. The law provides that no
training course may extend be
yond the expiration of six years
after the end of the war. A vet
must enter the course soon
enough so that he can finish it
before the six-year period is up.
(.). Do you get a vacation while
getting vocational rehabilitation?
A. Yes. You can get up to 30
duvs a year.
