Mrs. Ethel Conklin Johnson of
Wallowa arrived in La Grande
yesterday and is a guest of her

Bob Mann of Baker has sold
his grocery store there, after op
erating it two years, and with
Mrs. Mann will make his home
in La Grande where he is em
ployed at a local grocery store
and meat market. They are for
mer residents of this city.

Miss Elaine Coleman will ar
rive here Sunday from Condon
to visit with her mother, Mrs.
Leo Hansen, until the following
day when she will leave for Eu
gene where she will work toward
her master's degree at the Uni
versity of Oregon. Miss Coleman
has spent the latter part of the
summer at the ranch home of her
uncle. At the university she is
president of Alpha Xi Delta so
rority. Mrs. Tom Williamson of Wal
lowa lake spent Wednesday in
La Grande.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Williams of
Portland are guests for several
days at the home of her sister,
Mrs. H. A. Dotson. Mrs. Williams
is also a sister of Leo Hansen and
Mrs. M. Mortensen, both of La
Grande.
Mr. and Mrr Glen Wagner,
their daughter, Betty Grimsrud,
and son-in-law Carl Grimsrud,
are returning today from Wal
lowa lake.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hansen
and children, Howard and Carol
Jean will leave tonight for Wal
lowa lake. They plan to return
Monday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Detrick and
children will return tonight from
Burns.
Miss Elaine Coleman will ar
rive tonight from Condon to visit
her mother, Mrs. Leo Hansen,
2112 Adams avenue. She will
leave Monday for the University
of Oregon in Eugene, where she
is president of Alpha Xi Delta
sorority this year.
Stake Convention
Held at Tabernacle
Mrs. Grant Wilde of Union,
head of the stake primary asso
ciation of the L.D.S. presided at
the convention of the group yes
terday at the tabernacle.
Two representatives of the
general board of the primary at
Salt Lake, Mrs. Broadbank and
Mrs. Anderson, were present to
lead the discussions of the pro
gram for the year for children's
groups of 4 to 12 years old.
About 100 leaders from Walla
Walla, Pendleton, Baker, Imbler,
Union and La Grande were pres
ent. The program discussed for
the year includes handicrafts and
music.

Girl Scouts Have
Party for Leader
Twenty-six Girl Scouts of troop
I were present at the farewell
party at Cove last night for Miss
Marion Snider, troop leader, who
leaves soon to teach at Pendleton.
The party was a swimming and
wiener roast party.
Miss Snider was presented a
rug, as a farewell gift by the
troop, which she had organized
at First Christian church early
this year and which, with as
sistance of Neva Neil, and Mrs.
C. B. Marquis had led through a
successful summer. , .
Punch for the party was serv
ed by the troop committee.
Sew and So Club
Has Games Meeting
Sew and So club met last night
with Mrs. Sheldon Price and spent
the evening at games, including
fishpond and guessing games.
Mrs. Grand Chandler won the at
tendance prize.
Other prizes were won by Flor
abolle Booth, Arda Chandler and
Betty Waite and Mildred Strong.
Refreshments were served by the
hostess. Next meeting of the club
is at the home of Mrs. Dan West
enskow of Fruitdale Sept. 13.

son of Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Swiers
of 2004 First street, is home on
three weeks leave after four years
in the navy. It is his first visit
home in two years. His wife, the
former Marie Mossman of Phila
delphia, will join him here next
week and at the conclusion of his
leave he will join his ship, the USS
Phoenix at Philadelphia where
she is in drydock. Swiers has 11
battle stars. His vessel is known
to the Japanese as "the gray
ghost" for its seeming ability to
turn up at unexpected places and
escape great damage. The ship
carried Secretary of Statu Hull
to a secret meeting. Bob Hall, son
of E. L. Hall of La Grande is also
a member of the crew of the
Phoenix.
