    73rd Anniversary
Of Invention Of
'Soda' Observed
SEATTLE, July 23 (UP)
Three-year-old Uavid Guy Myers,
with chocolate1 on his freckled
chin and a soda jerker's cap on
his blonde curls, guve the ice
cream soda its 73rd birthday
party today.
Little Davey quite properly led
the nation in this unique celebra
tion. His great-grandfather, G. O.
Guy, claimed to have invented
the ice cream soda that people
all over the world have been guZ'
zling for almost three-quarteis of
a century. :
David trolled into a Seattle
drug store arid mixed the anniv
ersary soda himself with a little
help from hjs father, Kenneth
Myeis. Hu,v squirted chocolate
syrup into a 'glass and plunked in
vanilla ice cream. Then came the
soda water mostly on David.
The chocolate stuck to the bot
'.om and the soda fizzled over
the top but David gulped it down
and said he liked it anyway. The
photographers' flash bulbs pop
ped Davey blinked his big
Hue eyes, arid thus passed a per
iod in the history of the ice cream
soda.

Truck Companies To
Eliminate Losses
From Duplication
PORTLAND, July 23 (UP)
Seven Oregon trucking com
panies formed plans today for
speedier service and elimination
of empty miles of operation and
duplication) of services by sus
pending thoir "less than truck-
load operations and directing
partial truckloads to the K. C.
truck lines of Hubbard and the
Woodburn -truck lines of Wood
burn. Donald Call, ODT district man
ager of the highway transport
department, said the two lines
would deliver shipments to des
tination and would build up full
loas at transfer points for pickup
by line haul carriers the numbers
of pickups and deliveries would
be lesesned by the heavy line
haul quipment and would speed
up service and save man-hours,
he declared.
Call estimated the plan would
save 25,000 truck-miles and 250,
Otlt) tire-miles annually.
Participating carriers are the
Willamette valley transfer com
pany, and Salem-Portland motor
freight companies of Poniland;
the Reim truck service and Salem
navigation company, of Salem;
Pierce auto freight lines, inc., of
Mi'dlord; K. C. truck lines of
Hubbard; and the Woodburn
truck line of Woodburn.

Safeguard Eyes
With Boracic-
BARBARA HALE: Brigni-eyed.
. By ALICIA HART . '
NEA Staff Writer .
Beauty-wise swimmers make a
habit of bathing their- eyes, with
a boracic solution right after
they've had their. - mermaid's
fling. This safeguard against any
possible contamination of tvo
bright eyes should be a "mijst"
if you are not sure how clean the
water is.
To avoid risks, Barbara Hale
"First Man Into Tokyo" lovely
always carries an eye wash in
her beach bag and bathes her
sparklers even after a swim 1 in
chlorinated water. ,
To safeguard eyes against re
flected glare while in the pool,
Barbara wears a film of; sun
screen lotion over her lids an
other cue for you which she
says helps to prevent burn and
is a protection against : cross
hatched lines that may result
fiom squinting. '
P. S. from Barbara: "When you
come out and grab your- dark
glasses, remember that they're
for the sun and not for reading,
knitting or driving at night."
Three Restaurants
Open in Olympia .
OLYMPIA, July 23 (UP)
There was a' mad scramble 'for
seats today at three Olympia res
taurants after other eating places
closed their doors, awaiting fur
ther allocation of red points, by
the office of price administration.
James Ramey, spokesman for
restaurant owners who closed
their establishments at midnight
Saturday, said that "no reopeping
is contemplated until, the . OPA
comes through with more red
points. It was a question of, pat
ronizing the black market'or
closing, so we closed."
The sudden and effective clos
ing action shoved the burden of
feeding this city of war workers
and state employees on three res
taurants. Although the three eat
eries now in operation ordinarily
care for a high percentage of the
trade, the closure placed the
squeeze on their ration point sup
ply as well. ,
Gov. Mon C. Wallgren indi
cated' t'i a t 'additional ration
points would have to be given
to the three restaurants in opera
tion "or this city will be without
restaurant facilities entirely."
