UNION, July 17 (Special)
Sunday afternoon, about 15 hap
py boys and gills left Union en
route to the' 35th annual institute
of the Methodist church, which
convened Monday morning at the
Methodist camp grounds near
Wallowa lake.. The Union group
was joined ,by Cove, North Pow
der, Haines' and the two Metho
dist church of v.a Giande, mak
ing about 50 in the group from
this section of the county. These
young people wflre accompanied
from Union by Mr. and Mrs. Gil
bert Courtright, Rev. and Mrs. O.
A. Fortune and Mrs. Taylor of
Ladd Canyon, It is estimated
there will be about 150 in attend
ance. Mrs. Qi A. Fortune of Un
ion will be clean of girls and Rev.
Mr. Fortune will be business
malinger

Dorothy Chadwick
The home of Mr. and Mrs. John
Chadwick at the Union depot was
the scene of real western hospi
tality Sunday when friends and
neighbors' gathered to enjoy a
picnic and to visit with Miss Dor
othy Chadwick. Miss Chadwick
is here from her home in Mont
clair, N. J., having very recently
flown from the eastern coast to
Spokane, from there she travelled
to Union via train. Miss Chad
wick spent her girlhood In this
section of the country and has
many . friends in the Grande
Ronde valley. At the gathering
Sunday wore many friends,
among them Mr. and Mrs. P. S.
Nolton, son-in-law and daughter,
Major and Mrs. Robert Proebstel
and two children, Mrs. Kate Hall
and daughter Ruth Margaret; Mr.
and Mrs. J. G. Price, the Misses
May Stearns and Mable Doty of
La Grande; Mr. and Mrs. Neil T.
Kight and Betty from Cove, Mrs.
Belle Busick from Union and Mr.
and Mrs. W. E. Hall and two chil
dren from Cheney, Washington.
Mrs. Hall is a daughter of Mr. and
Mr." Chadwick and she with her
husband and children are also
guests at Hie Chadwick homo.
A number of friends of Mr. and
Mrs. Erward Griggs, honored
them with a picnic supper at Pio
neer park Saturday evening.
Hosts for the occasion were Mr.
and Mrs. Merlyn Langford, Mr.
and Mrs. Wayne Reavis and Mr.
and Mrs. Virgil Hill, wlio ar
ranged for the supper. Treats
were furnished by the groom, Mr.
Edward Griggs. In addition to
the hosts and honored guests
there were present Mr. an Mrs.
Forest Scroggins, Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard Huffman, Mr. and Mrs.
Jason Evans and Mr. and Mrs.
RexGriggs.
Mr. and Mrs. Al Schroedcr and
young son bid farewell to their
Union friends Monday and left
to make their home in Longview,
Wash., where they recently pur
chased Scotty's Motel. Mr. and
Mrs. Schroeder formerly operated
the Al's auto court and made
many friends during their six
years residence in Union.
Supreme Forest Woodmen cir
cle will hold its annual picnic in
Pioneer park, July 22. A potluck
dinner will be served at 1:30 p.
m. Mrs. Marvin Titus is in
charge of the program and it is
hoped that all members and their
families will be present to enjoy
the outing.
The Social club of the OES
will hold its first picnic Tuesday
evening at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Nele Morrison. A potluck
supper will be served at 6:30 in
the lovely grounds of the Morri
son home. AH members are ex
pected to attend and to bring
friend husband as a guest.

Annual Convention
Of Legion Postponed
PORTLAND, July 17 (UP)
The 27th annual convention of
the Oregon department of the
American Lie g ion, originally
scheduled in Portland for Aug.
17 has been postponed. Travel
and occommodation restrictions
were given as the reason.
The decision was made yester
day, at a state convention com
mittee meeting. However, Fritz
Nissen, department adjustant and
committee chairman said meet
ings of the permanent finance
and executive commutes will be
held as planned, Aug. 10.
Election of state officers will
not be held, and incumbents will
remain in office until such time
as the convention is held, Nissen
said.
$800,000 Paid Out
Of Highway Fund
SALEM, July 17 (UP) The
first payment to counties of their
shares of the 1945 state highway
fund was made by the state de
partment today. A total of $800,
000 was paid out. The second ap
portionment for the year will be
made in December, when $1,200,-
000 will be paid to the counties,
with each share based on motor
vehicle registrations in each coun
ty.

blackout and dimout regulations,
instituted as a war measure in
