' Wistful little Gonski caused a
mild wave of confusion and con
sternation today in Philadelphia's
streets, bars and restaurants.
People gave him a wide berth
as he tagged along at the end of
a leash while his master, Sound
man 2'c V. O. Mailman, Redding,
Calif., and another sailor. Sea
man W. R. Noiton, Louisville,
Ky., saw the city's sights.
Gonski is a nine-weeks old
skunk, named after a legendary
navy bad-luck figure. Hartman,1
got him from a friend in Cali-!
fornia. Other than shocking pass-;
ersby, Gonski caused no further
disorder to the public. Ho has
been distinctly "dis-odorized."

tive and modern room in the
house, say' the women who are
planning on new homes in the
near future.
If thoy must spend the better
part of the day preparing three
meals and tidying up aftei wards,
they point out, then they want
the lightest, airiest, most scienti
fically equipped room possible.
More windows topped the
list of "musts" demanded by the
thousands of women who took
part in a recent kitchen contest
conducted by Western Family.
Some wanted entire sides of
fjass and many others also want
ed glass sliding doors opening
onto a tiled terrace for al fresco
dining.
Breakfast nooks were ruled out
completely. Instead of crnmpod
subicles, they suggest a glassed-ln
section just off the kitchen, which
extends past the actual building
line.
Time-Savers
U-shaped work centers are the
answer- to how to conserve en
ergy, say these omuteur archi
tects. Also in demand were a
deep freeze unit in the refriger
ator, so that shopping could be
done weeks ahead; fluorescent
lighting in the ceiling and a light
in the oven as well us over the

and radio, and a large mirror for

New Cars To Be Off
Ration List Jan. 1
WASHINGTON, July 12 UP)
New passenger cars, which al
ready are in production, may be
ration-free by next January but
most Americans probably won't
i able to get one for some time
afterward.
War production board believes
enough materials will be avail
able during the next two months
to allow 'manufacturers to make
more cars than their present
auotas. Those call for some 090,
000 new cars by next March 31.
There was no estimate of the
exact number of new autos the
industry will be able to make if
materials are more plentiful. But
Henry P. Nelson, WPB director of
reconversion, told a press confer
ence new cars could be removed
from the ration list by January.
Until then, essential users such
as doctors, law enforcement of
ficers and some war workers will
get first call.
SHAEF Dissolves
PARIS, July 12 (UP) Supreme
headquarters of the allied expe
ditionary forces (SHAEF) and
the combined allied command
will be dissolved, effective at
12:01 a. m. July 14, it was an
nounced .today. Maj. Talbot Pat
rick of Goldsboro, N. C, chief
press officer at SHAEF, said the
process of dissolving headquar
ters was almost completed at the

Probably life in Alaska was
hectic in '98, but certainly its
scene is tunefully, colorfully and
hilariously enhanced In "Belle of

ers that Scott is an old acquaint
ance who in the past absconded
with her heart and bankroll.

'Admiral' Cruised Steadily

Birger Helgcsen disdained bell
bottom trousers but he found
good use for a coat of navy blue.
That's why the federal bureau
of Investigation had him in jail
today.
New Jersey FBI agent Samuel
K. MeKee said Helgesen, 51-year-old
Norwegian, appointed himself
a captain in the Norwegian roy
al navy two years ago, then pro
moted himself to rear admiral.
He became a familiar figure
along the New Jersey coast, the
FBI said, as he divided his time
between two women, one his
wife.
When Helgesen decided on a
change of feminine companion
ship, McKee said, he just in
formed his wife he was off on a
transatlantic mission for the Nor
wegian navy.
Dressed in a heavily-braided
uniform, gold-monogramed brief
case in hand, he'd wave a cheery
goodbye and "go to sea." Ac
cording to the FBI "sea" was just
a few miles up the Atlantic coast
from his Cape May home. There,
the FBI said, Helgesen would re
port to his ladylove he had just
returned from a mission and was
ready to settle down for a good
rest.
When the spirit moved him,
Helgesen would reverse the pro
cedure, informing nis iwonmouin
county companion he had to be
off "to sea." He'd wave a cheery
goodbye, pick up the brief case
and with a smart salute leave,
etc.
He is charged with illegally
wearing the uniform of an offi
cer in the Norwegian royal navy.
Mitscher Home For
Visit With Mother
HILLS BORO, Wis., July 12
(UP) Vice Adm. Marc A. Mit
scher, a hometown boy who made
good by going to sea, carr.3 back
to his mother and homefolk to
day. The admiral, whose naval tac
tics puzzle the Japanese navy,
used some of his sea strategy and
slipped into town almost unkown.
They didn't know just what
time to expect their famous
townsman, but the people of
Hiilsboro were determined to
give Admiral Mitscher, scrappy
little leader of task force 58, a
rousing ,welcome home. Taking
no chances on being caught un
prepared by ah earlier arrival,
thin town ' (,146 persons was
decked out in flags and bunting
last night, ready for the homecoming.
