tree, Walter, A. Gillette, and Mr.

holiday in Baker, taking pictures
of the parade and rodeo.

Mrs. Goldie Boyles and her
daughter, Eileen Shortsleeves,
have returned from Portland,
where they had been for several
weeks, while-'Mrs. Shortsleeves
was receiving medcal treatment.
Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Morgan, Mr.
and Mrs. Lynn Wright and Mrs.
Florence Jasper went to Milton
yesterday 'the Morgans visited
with friends, while the other
three visited their daughters,
Gerry Wright and Mary Jasper,
who are employed there.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bailie and
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Graham
spent the fourth of July in Mil
ton. '
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Shaner and
Dr. and Mrs. J. J. Pitlinger of
Astoria are guests at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Erling Olsen.
They will remain here until the
end of the week. Mrs. Shanner
is a sister of Mr. Olsen.
AUXILIARY HAS LUNCHEON
Mrs. H. R. Voetburg was host
ess to the ladies auxiliary to the
Brotherhood of Railway Train
men and their families for a pot
luck luncheon at her home yes
terday. After the mid-day meal
the afternon was spent playing
pinochle, with Mrs. Carl Ratliff
winning high score.

3 New Initiates
Three ' new candidates, Mrs.
Maude Holman, Mrs. Douglas
Holman and Mrs. Floyd Bat-
chelor, were initiated Into the
Veterans of Foreign Wars auxi
liary Tuesday evening when the
organization held a meeting in
the K of P hall.
Mrs. R. H. Seaton presided over
the session. The Do-Nul Hut
contribution, for the 20th day of
lha month, amounted to $10.
The sewing group was invited
to meet at the home of Mrs. E. N.
Olsen, 1410 Cherry street, at 2
p.m. July 19.
After the business meeting the
post and the auxiliary held a
joint social hours, during which
time Mr. and Mrs. M. N. Sullinsi
charter members, were honored
on the occasion of their 35th wed
ding anniversary. Refreshments
were served by a volunteer com-mitlee.

Spring flowers decorated the
home of Mr. and Mrs. L. D.
Shurtleff north of the airport at
Baker June 28, for the wedding
of Mrs. Shurtleff's mother, Mrs.
Nellie James, formerly of La
Grande and Ontario, to Roy An
derson of Baker.
The service was read at 9
o'clock that evening by Rev.
Frank W. Zook of the Christian
church, in the presence of the
immediate families.
The bride wore an aqua crepe
dress with a corsage of yellow
and pink rosebuds and white car
nations. MT. Anderson's daugh
ter, Miss Grace Anderson, was
maid of honor and wore a white
crepe dress.
L. D. Shurtleff was best man.
Following the wedding, a re
ception was held, and ice cream
and cake were served. Miss
Donna Walker assisted with the
serving.
Also attending the ceremony
were the groom's brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. t and. Mrs. John
Norregaard and his daughter,
Mrs. Edith Gurghardt rf Port
land. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson are at
home at 1144 Elm street, Baker.

the fall of that year, left Union
county with the national guard.
Lieutenant Houx is the brother
of Mrs. Richard Miller and Leon
ard Houx, both of Cove.

Average Payrolls
In State Increase
SALEM, July S (UP) Aver
age payrolls of industries not
connected with the war effort are
gradually increasing, a report
from the. state unemployment
compensation commission indi
cated today.
First quarter payrolls for all
industries covered by the com
mission increased 2.1 percent over
1944, the report showed, while
nverage covered employment was
down 6.8 peroent,
Lumbering showed the largest
decline in payrolls, dropping 14.8
percent, followed by construction
and shipyards, which dropped
12.3 and 4.7 'percent respectively,
reflecting completion' of several
wartime projects and contracts.
Wholesale and retail concerns,
however, increased their payrolls
by $3,672,000 during the first
quarter as compared to the same
period last year.

Sift and measure flour, Rift again with baking
' powdor, sugar, and salt. Cut in shortening until
mixture is very fine. Beat egg; combino with
milk; then stir into flour mixture. Knead gently;
roll out about H inch thick.
FAMILY SHORTCAKE
Divide dough in half: pat gently into two 8-inch
cake pans. Bake in hot Oven (450 F.) about 20
minutes. Split while warm; lilt with sweetened
fruit or berries. Serve with top milk or whipped
evaporated milk or coffee cream.
HOW TO WHIP EVAPORATED '
MILK OR COFFEE CREAM
Pour evaporated milk or cream into freezing
tray of refrigorator. Chili until ice crysta la start to
form around the edge. Place in chilled bowl and
beat vigorously with rotary beater until thick,
ened and fairly stiff. Flavor with a fcw drops of
vanilla.
