Weather at 101
PORTLAND, June 28 (UP)
The highest temperature for Ore
gon for the week ending June 26
was reported at 101 in Meuiora.
Lowest maximum temperature of
73 was recorded at North Bend,
and the lowest minimum tem
perature of 31 was at Madras,
the U. S. weather bureau re
ported today.
, Throughout the state, the week
was notable for warm days and
cool nights. A few local showers
and thunderstorms occurred, but
rainfall was generally too light
to wet the soil.
, Hot, dry weather has teen un
favorable for spring rain local
ly, but the warmth has been good
I for corn. Some winter rye and
I barley are ready for harvest.
Wind damaged fruit trees in
i some areas, but most late fruits
are developing well. ,
The weather has been gener
ally favorable for haying and
cutting of the first alfalfa crop
is practically complete In many
places.

try, for heroic action against the
enemy on April 11, during the
Okinawa island operation has
been announced.
"When enemy artillery and
mortar fire completely disrupted
wire communications and dam
aged an essential radio leaving
the battalion commander with no
means of communications with
his attacking companies, Pfc.
Wilson dashed to the battalion
headquarters where he secured
another radio," the citation said.
"Upon his return trip he discov
ered that an enemy group had
taken up a position that enabled
them to place grazing machine
gun and rifle fire on open ter
rain through which he had to
traverse. With utter disregard
for his personal safety, Pfc. Wil
son crossed the exposed terrain
through the hail of enemy fire
and delivered the urgently need
ed radio to his observation post."

day on a convalescent furlough

In Fort Lewis, Wash. Smith,
who entered the service In May,
1042, has spent IB months in Af
rica, Sicily and Italy.
Tech. Sgt. and Mrs. Harry Van
Avery have returned to Walla
Walla, Wash., after spending a
few days at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. John D. Larson..
Sgl. Van Avery was seriously
wounded in Luxembourg in De
cember, 1U44, and is a patient at
McCaw hospital, Walla Walla.

Richard Cash, motor machin

orders for a leave from his base
in the south Pacific, after 17
months duty on a rescue ship. He
will spend his leave with his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. James Cash,
in La Grande.
He entered the navy in No
vember, J942, at the local college
under the V-12 program.
Mr. and Mrs. John D. Larson
received a telephone call from
their son, Second Lt. John A.
Larson, saying that he had ar
rived safely ;n New York. Lt.
Larson was wounded April 7 and
has been hospitalized in England
since then.
Dean Morehead, former La
Grande resident, who has been
ittending the Massachusetts In
stitute of Technology under a na
val program, visited briefly in La
Grande with fiiends Tuesday. He
was enrouto to Sweet Home, Ore.,
to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
L. C. Morehead, who moved there
recently from La Grande.
Lt. Francis E. Snodgrass, who
1b serving with the military po
lice In France, has been decorated
by the French government with
the croix de guerre and palms.
Lt. Snodgrass, known to his La
Grande friends as Honce, is the,
nephew of Lot L. Snougrass. His

wife, the former Audrie For-
strom of North Powder, resides
in Portland,
Mrs. S. B. Zigler yesterday re
ceived a telephone call from her
son, Staff Sgt. Alfred F. Zigler,
from an eastern port saying that
he hopes to be in La Grande for
his brother's birthday (July 21).
He entered the army in 1942,
and has been in Europe since
May, 1!)43, serving as an airplane
mechanics inspector in England,
France, Holland and Germany.
Sgt. Zigler said he has enough
points for discharge.
Flight Officer and Mrs. Harry
Karns are here from Marianna,
Fla., visiting his mother, Mrs.
Charles Andrews, and Mrs. Karns'
parents. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Fos
ter, in La Grande.
Karns will return to the Flor
ida base July 8 for overseas as
signment. He enlisted in the Royal Ca
nadian air force in February,
1H41, and served several months
in England as test pilot for an
RAF maintenance unit. In Aug
ust, 1943, while still in England
Karns transferred to the United
States air force, later returning
to this country. "
After being stationed at Mon
roe, La., for 6 months, he went
to a training school at Del Rio,
Tex. 1
Flight Officer Karris is a pilot
of a B-26, the newest' army ship,
that is used for low-level strafing.
Mrs. Ella Trice of' La Grande
received a telegram from her son,
Sgt. Lafayette Trice, at Hendricks
field, stating that- Ije is leaving
for Fort Lewis and' ;.jvill be dis
charged from the army soon.
Kenny Waldroff, who recently
completed a naval V-12 course
at Willamette university, is a
guest at the home of Mr. and Mis.
Martin Fitzgerald, La Grande. He
has been transferred from Salem
to Seattle, where he will attend
the University of Washington.

illness of both the prosecutor and

A six-night engagement at the
Union county fairgrounds begin
ning July 0, under American Le
gion auspices was announced to
day by the management of the
American United Shows a carni
val and thrill show organization.
Highlighting the nightly per
formances will be a series of free
outdoor performances by a group
of annalists known as the Flying
Apollos, and the Flying Skylarks,
who perform 130 feet in the air
without nets or other safety de
vices. Gaskill and his bending pole,
Hany D. Matthews and his bal
ancing act, Miss Marvis, Anna-
bell-3, aerial clown, Bobby Burns,
junior heavyweight wrestler, and
numerous other attractions are to
be offered, including several
rides.
