On Liuchow Base
CHUNGKING, June 26 (UP)
Fighting raged on throe sides of
Liuchow today as the Japanese
continued their desperate defense
of-tlie air base city, the Chinese
high command reported.
Chinese troops opened another
attack on the bitterly-contested
airfield south of the city, first
reached last Friday.
To the north of the city, the
Chinese captured Tapuchen and
reached the western suburbs of
Liuchepv, eight miles from Liu
chow; ' ' , .

along the Kwangsi-Kwantung
railroad northwest of the city,
crossed to the east bank of the
Liu river to within three miles
of Liuchow.
Along the Chokiang coast,

Industrial shares moved into new
high ground since. 1937 after lag
ging behind the railroad section
of the stock market.
This confirmation of the rise
in rails and utilities generated
new enthusiasm. Buyers were
attracted to the whole industrial
list.
Gains in the general market
ranged to more than 3 points and
gains of more than a point each
were noted in U. S. Steel, Beth
lehem, Crucible, and Jones and
Laughlin preferred B. Common
wealth and Southern led in turn
over. Chicago Northwestern certifi
cates rose more than 3 points
and Union Pacific 2 points. G. R.
