Alcan Highway -Completion
Sought
WASHINGTON, June 22 (UP)
Two .bills were introduced in
the house today to authorize
President Truman to negotiate
with Canada for post-war con
struction of a 600-mile coastal
connecting route for the Alaska
highway. -
President Truman said yester
day at- Olympia he considered
tho project essentia).
The bills were introduced by
Rep. Hugh Delacy, D., Wash., and
E. L. Bartlctt, Alaskan delegate
They provide for construction
of a highway to connect the road
system of British Columbia, in
the vicinity of Prince George,
with the Alaska highway, near
Whithorsc in the Yukon territory.
They asked that $15,000,000 be
authorized for construction.

Deschutes Forest
Fire Controlled

BEND, Ore., June 22 (UP)
Oregon's worst forest fire of the
season under control today, after
blackening 850 acres of heavy
growth timber in the Metolius
river area of the Deschutes na
tional forest in the Bend district.
Tho blaze, which broke out
Wednesday, was checked by 280
forest service ..workers, loggers,
paratroopers from Pendleton and
conscientious objectors.

War Criminals to
Face Mass Trial
LONDON, June 22 (UP)
Reichsmarsbal Hermann Goering
and upwards of 100 other major
nazi war criminals will be tried
simultaneously on a single con
spiracy charge in the next six
months, an authoritative Amer
ican source said today.
The mass trial will be speedy
and should bo completed before
winter, he said.
The informant said Chief Jus
tice Robert Jackson, chief Amer
ican prosecutor, may press for
action by an Anglo - French -American
court In the event that
Russia docs not agree immedi
ately to the four-power tribunal
proposed by President Truman.
The number of nazi leaders to
be hailed into court for the mass
trial will be somewhere between
35 and 300. He said, but prob
ably would not exceed 100.
Besides Goering, tho group is
expected to include former Ger
man Foreign Minister Joachim
von Hibbcntrop, former ambas
sador to Turkey Franz von Papon,
a number of high SS storm troop
officers, assorted Gestapo leaders
and a group of key nazi indus
trialists anil financiers.
Ample international law al
ready exists on which to try the
accused men, the American said.
He indicated they would be in
dicted mainly under the Kellogg
Briand pact outlawing offensive
warfare.
Articles of The Hague conven
tion which made systematic ter
rorism, slave labor and other
common nazi practices interna
tional offenses also will be taken
into consideration, the informant
said.
