Tony winked at Glnglss and me
as he gave his attention to the
Englishman. "It cost me a fortune.
I don't know why I ever bought
It. But that's what it is Chanel
Number 5. Maybe you know
someone who'd like to take it off
my hands for. 1180."
The Englishman looked around
nervously as , if to ward off any

over the money, pocketed the per

Scotch and soda dashed out of the
bar.
"Amazing!" Olngiss exclaimed,
staring at Tony.
TONY MERCEDE has been one
first day we met. He is back .in
the States now, a traffic expert
witn a nationwide trucking con
cern, but how he can reconcile
himself to such an uneventful life
as .that after what he went
through In China and India for
two years is a mystery to me. He
started In the trucking business as
a greaser and mechanic when , he
was 18, coming up the hard way
to the point where, in 1941, he
was loaned to The United States
government by hlB employer. The
government, having received the
Arnsteln report on the Inefficient
use' and 'handling of Lend-lease
trucking equipment on tho Burma
Road, Immediately sent Tony to
China as a transportation adviser
to the Chinese government.
Tony was well on his way when
the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor:
ho cleared Manila 12 hours before
the city foil. Ho was a transpor
tation engineer on the Burma
Road , when the Japs Invaded
Burma in the spring of 1942, and
ho was working with tho Chinese
troops dynamiting bridges and
fighting of! guerrilla attacks
throughout tho long campaign
which finally left tho road a use

Chungking, and for many months

"TONY wasn't the only trinket
trader among the American
lads in China and India, but he
was by far the most famous of
them. Most of the trading among
our officers and engineers and
ground crews and pilots was done
haphazardly. A fellow newly ar
rived would have an extra elgaret
lighter In his baggage, and he
would soon find a purchaser will
ing to pay 10 times its original
cost because elgaret lighters are
unobtainable. Another would have
some fancy lipstick, or a bottle of
perfume, or a pair of nylon stock
ings. Such stuff would be brought
along -for very obvious reasons,
but when : the boys discovered
there was a good- cash market for
it, they would try to sell their
little prizes. ":. "
At that- point, Tony would
usually be on hand. And because
his job took him .all around the
country-J-from Chungking in the
north all the way to -Calcutta in
the south he could usually find
a market for anything he picked
up. He would take along a bag
full of female trinkets when he
went t6 Calcutta and sell them
es ho did the Chanel Number 5
to some anxious swain In' the city
of high-priced romance. Then hoi
would shop around among the
native stores and shops, .picking
up some 'liquor or tobacco or
knives to' take back with him.
He was a gambler of great abil
ity and infinite nerve. He got into
a 10-day poker game at Kunming
on one occasion with a buneh of
Flying Tigers arid was over $5000
in the hole when his luck changed
on the last day. Ho lost 16 pounds
during that session, but when the
game-was over and the "chips were
counted Tony was $12,000 ahead.
