Do You Know How Oregon Got a Name?
, .
It Seems It all Started As A Mistake
Markets
. By Eric W. Allen, jr.
SALEM, Ore., June 16 (UP) Have you ever wondered how Ore
gon happened to be named?
So have a lot of other people. As a matter of fact, the arguments
over where the name came from are still not entirely settled.
But it seems pretty certain now that the whole thing was a mis
take. -
Two recent and authoritative books have discussed the matter,
and they agree that Oregon comes from the same name source as
Wisconsin believe it or not. "
The first mention of the nam!
was on a map of what is now (he
Atid-west, where there was a
Mention of the Ouisconsink (Wis
consin) river. At the time when
the map was transcribed, a care
less engraver wrote the name as
Ouariconsint, and to add insult
to injury, hypenated it "Quari-con-sint"
and put the "sint" on a
separate line. :
This tale comes from "Names
on the Land" by George R. Stew
art, who says that the resulting
"Quaricon" was used by Major
Robert Rogers, famed as the lead
er of Rogers' Rangers, in a peti
tion for an exploring expedition.
He also used the forms Ouragon,
Ourgan and Ourigan.
According to the book "Oregon
Geographic Names," (1944 edi
tion) -by ..Lewis A.; McArhur,
well-khow'n Oregon historian, the
name did not appear very promi
nently for a number of years.
It seems pretty certain, McAr
thur and Stewart agree, that '.he
name did not come from any one
of a variety of other sources
which have been proposed.
Among them are "Oregano."
Spanish for majoram; "Orejon,"
meaning big ear or slice of dried
apple, "Origen" or source, or
from the Spanish kingdom of
Aragon.
Others have guessed, probably
wrongly, that the name came
from the French "ouragan,"
meaning storm, or the Indian
words "orighen," "ogawa-peon"
and "owah-waken," menninf? fine,
river - west and river of slaves
respectively. ...
blewart say's the most likely
source of the name is from the
Ouaricon of the mistaken map,
then passing by a tongue-twisting
process to Ourigan and Ouragon,
and then, finally, Oregon.
I There, was ieven a suggestion
! that the' state was named for an
i Irishman named O'Rcgan.
