(UP) They came down to the
money-costing stage of the Ken-
lucky derby toduy with the wea
ther the deciding factor in the
size of the field.
With more rain forecast it was
indicated that the field for the
71st annual running of the Blue
Grass classic would be cut from
17 probable starters to 13.
The 13 which seemed certain
to go were Jeep, Hoop, jr., Pot
O' Luck, Alexis, Darby Dieppe,
Air Sailor, Fighting Step, Bymea-
bond, Sea Swallowa, Foreign
Agent, Tiger Rebel, Misweet and
Bert G.
Four May Not Start
Track conditions seem certain
to result in the withdrawal of
Burning Death, Col. E. R. Brad
ley's hope for his fifth Kentucky
derby victory, as well as Fair
Jester and Kenilworth Lad. Ja
cobe, who did not weather the
shipping from New York, wns put
in the class of doubtful starters,
regardless of track conditions.
As they came down to the case
of putting up the $500 entry fee
or cancelling their colors in the
biggest race of the year, Darby
Dieppe, was winning the belated
support of those turf followers
who like the horses that prefer
heavy going.
But no matter what the condi
tions of the track come tomorrow
evening, it's certain that the cus
tomer will choose their mutucl

Braves' Chances Are
Boosted by Holmes
NEW YORK, June 8 (UP) Tommy Holmes is reviving pennant
hopes of ihe Braves today and Is one of the most loughi after play
ers in the majors with reliable reports saying the Cubs have of
fered as much as $80,000 for him, possibly to replace Bill Nichol
son, their own ace slugger, if he goes into military service.
Holmes made five hits yesterday as ihe Braves wo.i twice, 3 to
1 and 7 lo 3. extending the Phils' losing streak to 11 games, longest
of the season. He drove in three runs and scored two himself.
The Giants won a "gift" vie-
lory from the Dodgers at the
Polo grounds, 10 to 5, scoring
eight unearned runs on eight
Brooklyn errors. Dodger pitch
ers nlso contributed to the delin
quency with two wild pitches;
seven walks and a hit batsman.
