Restoration of Lidice Planned
As Memorial to Heroic Czechs
Bv ROSELLEN CALLAHAN
NEW YORK, Juno 7 (UP)
Ten miles west of Prague there
is a field of crooked furrows
stretching as far as the eye can
see. Nothing grows there. The
charred and rubble-sifted earth
was not plowed for good purpose.
It was maliciously turned over by
Nazi murderers to hide signs of
one of the most infamous barbar
isms in history the burning of
the tiny Czechoslovakian town of
Lidice and the wholesale mass
acre of Us citizens.
By this rapine act the Nazis
sought to obliterate from the face
of the earth a 800-yenr-old vil
lage which bore the brunt fit
thoir rage over the death of their
hangman, Reinhard Hoydrich.
Instead, June 10, 1942, will livo
forever in the memories of freedom-loving
peoples as a symbol
of Nazi terrorism, ftna a rcouin
j Lidice will serve as a monument
to remind generations to come
that if they value their freedom
I they must remain strong.
I The new Lidice modern and
scientifically i planned was da
signed at the Columbia school of
architecture in New York under
the direction of Dean Leopold
Arnaud and Czechoslovak archi
tect Robert Podzcmny. Work will
soon begin to translate the mod?l
into n productive, bustling town.
It will be built around a nn
tlonnl memorial park. The 200-year-old
St. Martin's church,
which had been closed to worship
by the Nais long before they
burned it clown, will be rebuilt
on its original site in the center
of the park. A world memorial,
which will accommodate 60,000
people, Is to be erected on a hill
dominating the whole area south
of the park.
Lidice's citizens were mostly
miners and farmers. So a region-
