the actual total, including thou
sands not yet transferred to Hie
records In Washington, has pass
ed 1,000,000.
The 986,214 figure includes
107,215 for the navy, coast guard
and marine corps, and 078,939
army casualties. The army total
reflects actual fighting . only
through mid-April. It does not
include losses suffered since then
in Europe, Okinawa and the
Philippines.
Undersecretary of War Robert
P. Patterson reported that the
Philippines campaign up to May
fl has cost 46J638,ormy casualties,
including 10,432.. killed, 35,09!)
wounded, and 507 missing. By
contrast, the Japanese have lost
237,256 in counted dead und pii
sonors and many more who died
where they could, not be found
and counted, Patterson said.
Patterson estimated that army
forces in the Pacific have killed

Guadalcanal campaign, not count
ing the fighting on Okinawa.

Trading increased on the stock
market today as prices continued
to move higher in all depart
ments. Gains ranged to two points or
more in special issues. The lead
ing groups improved fractionally
with the utility average reaching
u new high since April 21, 1937.
Dividend news continued to
sway individual issues und to
help the general market.-
Sales totaled 1,370,000 share-
compared with 1,210,000 yester
day. "Big board" bond sales ag

Grain futures displayed easineor
with corn and May wheat rela
tively steady on the board of
trade today. Caution prevailed
with interest centered in the ac
tion of May rye.
Rye led the downturn with
losses on the close ranging from
to 1 cents a bushel; wheat
unchanged to off ; corn up
to off Vi; oats up Yt to off .
Barley countered the trend with
gains of 1 Vi to 1 cents a bushel.
May wheat showed firmness
most of ' the session but when
rices reached $1.77, a new crop
high, offerings came out plenti
fully. Muy sold in exchange for
July at around 12 to 12 cents
difference.
Reports thul frost failed to
damage wheat tended to case
prices early in the day. South- -western
interests reported sales
of 150,000 bushels of spot grain,
and other scattered lots were
noted at Kansas City,
