Stocks Break On
War, Tax Rumors
NEW YORK, May 10 (UP)
Selling pressure increased on the
stock market today. Prices had
their worst break since March 26
on increased volume.
Two reasons stood out for the
selling. The top one was the in
dication as expressed by Secre
tary Mqrgenthau that the admin
istration will fight any proposals
for a general tax relief at the
present time. The second, losing
in favor, was that the market was
entitled to a drop at this time to
consolidate the recent gains.
Added to these were rumors
and guesses. Among the latter
wi.s the guess that Japan would
not hold out long now that Ger
many is out of the conflict.

man. With the end of the war in
Europe, the office of censorship
inlormed newspaper editors they
may now tell where the presi
dent has been, where he is, and
where he's going, But they can't
tell the exact time he's going
somewhere, or by what route.
