LIFK INSURANCE VS. COMMUNISM
Roer B. Hull recently expressed the interesting opinion
that life insurance, with its 21 billions of assets, represents
America's first defense against communism. Nothing could
be more thoroughly opposed to the communistic plan than
life insurance. Under communism, responsibility for one's
life and welfare is placed upon the state the individual
has no voice in determining his destiny. lie is a vassal,
subject to ironhanded governmental power.
Life insurance is one of the most pre-eminently individual
istic of businesses. It permits the individual to make his
own provision for the future of himself and his dependents.
It eliminates dependency, upon government or any other
agency. It is the answer to the "dole", in any shape or foirn.
It is not an accident that more than three-quarters? of all
the life insurance in force in the world has been bought and
sold in the United States most individualistic of nations.
Sixty-three millions of our citizens have policies, Kach of
these policies, as Air. Hull also said, represents an individual i

The lifesavers are getting a great
kick out of the canoe loaned by Wal
ter Dutli of Enterprise. It Is in use
through most of the afternoon each
day.

up to Bear Camp on the West Fork
of the Wallowa to Join the rest of
the boj's who were camped there un
der the leadership of Karl Johnson.

E. B. Lemon, registrar of O. S. C,

from prospective students in four or
five years. The preponderance of the
requests for information ask; about
the possibilities of obtaining employ
ment, he says. Many of the prospec
tive students declare they will not
be able to attend college this fall
unless they have some financial as
sistance. Although the federal gov
ernment, through the state emergency
relief administration, will distribute
nearly $3500 a month to needy stu
dents at the college, this and other
agencies will be hard pressed to meet
the great demand for student employ
ment. Mr. Lemon believes.
Advance applicants for admission
to the college give every indication
of a healthy increase in enrollment,
the rt'glstror reports, and tho outlook

Freshman week, a period set aside
for beginning students to become
oriented and to have plenty of time
to consult with their advUers, will
begin Monday, Sept. 24 and close the
