A mid-season survey of primary
and convention results shows that
the political map ottll Is strewn with
confusions) and contradictions.

The Republican drought continues
over large areas. No one denies tlint.
In other sections weathorvancs hava
been shifting appreciably and tho
outlook Is unsettled. Nowhere Is there
any sign of cyclonic developments,
The Democrats expect to keep
nicut of their present big majority in
the house, and while Republican
gains are accepted as certain, few
lenders of that party go so far as to
forecast any actual Republican ma
jority. Because of special circumstan
ces It Is conceded the Demccrats will
retain control of the senate, possibly
by a considerably Increased margin.
The bigger question Is what It all
portends with respect to the Roose
velt regime at Washington. On that
question the claims are distinctly :
conflicting, and each side is able to
produce evidence which It oeems to
regard as convincing.
That Is possible only because 1334
Is becoming a y.ar of political eccentricities.
Everyone agrees Mr. Roosevelt has
an exceptionally effective control
over his party.
Yet In the on Instance where
Chairman Parley went the length of
openly cndcrjlng a senatorial candi

that candidate was defeatxl for the
Domination.
Everyone agrees that many Repub
lican voters prefer Mr', Roosevelt's
leadership to that of old-line Repub
lican conservatives.
Vet probably the two most caustic
Republican senatorial critics of the
president Hatfield of West Virginia
and Robinson of Indiana have been
renominate almost without a mur
mur of opposition.
Everyone knows the Republican
high command lacks control over the
western group oX Republican Uberal-j.
Yet two of that group Boruh of
Idaho and Nye of North Dakota
are leading the Republican attack on
Roosevelt policies.

The Democratic leaders have been
openly rebuilding the party on what
they call the "liberal" elements among
the voters.
But In Minnesota, the Democrats
are seeking a fusion with the Repub
licans to defeat the ultra-liberal
farmer-laborltcs; in Virginia a group
of "young Republican, liberals" Is
seeking the overthrow of Democratic
Senator Byrd; In West Virginia, Rush
D. Holt won the Democratic senatorlul
nomination with the support of or
ganised labor and on a platform tco
liberal for the Parley-backed Shaver
to accept.
The evidence Is widespread that the

For Your Good Health
Jellied Sauerkraut llelixh: Soft
en two tablespoons of gelatin in
four Inblespoons cold water, then
dissolve In two cups of boilinu
water. Add one-fourth cup or
lemon juico and cool. Add the
contents of one No. 2 can of
sauerkraut, one-fourth cup of
grated raw carrot and one-fourth
cup of chopped green pepper.
Season with salt and pepper, ir
necessary. Pour into Individual
molds and chill until set. Un
mold and serve as a garnish to
cold meats, or ou crisp lettuce
with mayonnaise as a salad. This
serves eight.
These Are Easy to Make
Sauerkraut and Carrot Salad:
Mix one cup of canned sauerkraut
with one cup of grated raw car
rot and one cup of creamy may
onnaise. Arrange on lettuce hearts
and garnish with walnut halves.
Corned Beef and Sauerkraut:
Put alternate layers from two No.
2 cans of sauerkraut and one 12
ounce can of corned beef, broken
into large pieces In a baking dish.
Bake in a moderate 375 degree
oven or abut fifteen minutes.
