MERGER OF 3
COMPANIES TO
BE EFFECTED
Charles H. Cnrey, state corporation
commissioner, has announced an un
dertaking to merge the Federal Union
Savings .fc Loan Association, the Pru
dential Savings & Loan Association
and the Western Savings & Loan
Association, nil of Portland. The
three companies, with assets of ap
proximately $2,000,000 owned by 8,800
shareholders, would be merged into
the "Consolidated Building and Loan
Association," to insure a strong or
ganization without danger of over
loading at the start, Carey said.
The merger wua authorized under a
state- court order Issued July 30, and
carries the approval of a special
Advisory Board, building and loan
experts throughout the state and
prominent business men. Carey de
clared that he had taken advantage
of the federal home owners' loan cor
poration facilities to convert delin
quent mortgages into cash to streng
then tho quality of the assets.
According to Carey, liquidation of
the three associations as at present
conducted in the department is not
producing satisfactory results for the
members and will requlto consider
able time, owing to tho statutory
methods employed in liquidation and
distribution of dividends. Ho said
the proposed consolidation will bring
better resuIUi. The corporation com

LIQUOR PROFITS

SALESi, Aug. 23 OP) Although
total sales of Oregon's liquor stores
and agencies during the month ol
July, amounting to $254,593, were
slightly less than the preceding
month, marked reductions in opera
ting cokm swelled the profits to $51
654, official figures released here
showed.
Net returns of 428,181.80 from the
gallonoge tax on wines and boers and
$1,241.71 on licenses, totaJed $81,050,
all available for relief purposes.
Total net returns since the state
began operating storvs and agencies
on February 15 of this year, until
August 1. was shown to be Hi 1.007,
of which $187,019 came from store
and agency profits. 133,4G9 from
gallonagc taxes and $90,007 from li
cense. A net profit of $1,000,000 from
state liquor operations for the first
12 months was nam?d a probable fig
ure by commission officials.
Stores and agencies last month re
ported 133.435 transactions, sale of
41.608 resident permits and P.423
non-resident permits. Profits netted
20.5 per vnt of the selling cart.
