The speaking program downtown
will be held late enough In. the
afternoon so that all who attend
these other events may also hear
the talks. Plank seats will be ar
ranged along Adams avenue for
the accommodation of all.
All stored will ba open Friday
afternoon, and it Is expected that
many of the Portland business
men who will be here will take
this opportunity to meet their
trade In La Grande.
THOUSANDS EXPECTED
TO ATTEND CELEBRATION
With estimates ranging from
10.000 to 30,000, depending upon
the optimism of the prognostica
tes, the Semi-centennial U. P. cele
bration commtittce today announc
ed definitely that the Jubilee July
19, 20 and 21 unquestionably
would bring the largest crowd of
visitors to La Grande In Its his
tory. Word received from, many points
throughout the northwest, and the
fact that much of the population
of Union and Wallowa counties
will be hero for at least part of
the three-day show, already has
assured n tremendous audience for
the parades, pageantry and other
entertainment.
Whether the more optimistic
predictions will be borne out Is a
bit doubtful, but nil agree that
several thousand out-of-town vis
itors are assured and with the
thousands hero who will attend, a
record-breaking attendance Is held
certain. 1 ;
To Seat 10,000
Plana are being made to seat

stadium for the events to be held
there, nnrt standing room will pro
vide for probably 2000 more.
Enthusiasm is running high In
both Umatilla and Baker counties,
as well as Union and Wallowa
counties as the celebration ap
proaches, and delegations are to
be sent here from many cities out
side this Northeastern Oregon district.

The elevation of La Grande as
determined at the Steward build
ing, In which the armory is lo
cated, and which once was Stew
ard's Opera house, is 2788 feet 2
Inches above mean sea level. This
is Indicated by a bench mark
which Is a brass disk In the front
of the building, four feet above
ground lu the stone pillar east of
the entrance to the stairway on
the north side of Adams avauue,
100 feet east of Depot street.

There are 15 churches In La
Grande, with an estimate mem
bership of 300is, according to the
latest surveys.
The 50th anniversary of the or
rlval of the railroad In Eastern
Oregon, which will be celebrated
in La Grande July 19, 20 and 21,
will bring a large delegation of
Poitlnnders to this city, hended
by Philip Jackson, president of
the- Portland chamber of com
merce. Definite plans for the visi
tation were; completed this week.
According to word sent to La.
Grande, the delegotlon will leave
Portland at 9:80 p. m. July 19 on
tho Portland Ro.se, and will take
part in tiie program here July 20
and 21. The group plans to leave
for home late July 21. Reserva
tions for the trip are under the
charge of the trade and commerce
department of the Portland chamber.
U. P. PAYS HEAVY TAXES
The Union Pacific railroad la the
heaviest tax payer In Union coun
ty, annually paying into the coun
ty treasury between $125,000 and
9150,000, depending upon the cur
rent tax charges. Also-, more than
2000 persons In La Grande are de
pendent on wages and salaries
paid by the Union Pacific.
CITY INCORPORATED IN '85
The city of La Grande was In
corporated as a municipality In
February, 1885, less than a year
after the coming of the railroad to
the Grande Ronde valley.
