In Impressive Church Ceremony
Monday in San Francisco

of San Francisco. The wedding was
an event or Monday afternoon, July
3, and was solemnized In 8t. Peter's
episcopal church In San Francisco.
The ' bride and groom were attended
by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Smith, also for
mer la Qranders. the other guests
present being only close relatives and
friends.
.Immediately following the cere
mony, Mr. and Mrs. Klein left for
Carmel-By-The-Sea where they have
been spending their honeymoon. They
are. expected in La Orande In Sep
tember at which time they plan to
come north for the Pendleton Round
up and to visit Mr. Klein's relatives
here. . The groom Is well known here
and was graduated from the La
Orande High school. He is now con
n'ected with the Western States Co.

tion of Music club In Portland, In
1933; first place for duet work for
children at the club's convention In
Portland in 1034; played a recital this
spring of 15 numbers, studying with
Miss Frances Virginia ' Melton, at
Salem. Mrs. Wopiderllck and her
daughter are returning tomorrow to
Salem.

EAGLES PLAN
PARADE FLOAT
The regular meeting of. the Eagles
lodge which was postponed from
Thursday night until last night was
held as scheduled, but only routine
business was transacted.
The committees which - were ap
pointed to arrange floats for the cele
bratlon parade, held short meetings
nnd another meeting was announced
for this evening when further plans
will be made.

Marie Dressier, conscious and resting
comfortably, continued today to hold
her own In her fight against compli
cations of uremic poisoning and can
cer which have threatened her life.
Physicians said she spent a good day
yesterday and apparently has now at
least a temporary victory In her bat
tie for life.

structure masonry work on the Bon
neville dam will cost 93,805,502. A low
bid in this amount was submitted
Jointly by the General Construction
company and J. F. Shea Company.
Inc., of Portland when proposals were
opened here by the office of the dis
trict engineer. The bids will be sub
mittcd to Washington, D. C.
Engineers here have said that no
great engineering difficulties would
be encountered should sea -locks
eventunlly be authorized. It would
be comparatively easy, it was said,
to change sill specifications to per
mit a greater depth of water.
MERCURY AT 90
HERE ON FRIDAY
The mercury moved up to 90 above
Friday, one degree warmer than
Thursday, but not as warm propor
tionately as at Baker and Pendleton
At Baker it was 00 above, the warm
est day in several weeks, and at Pen
dleton It was 07, the warmest since
June 11.
The forecast for the weekend Is for
unsettled weather In Northeastern
Oregon, with generally fair weather
next week and above normal tern'

TO ENTERPRISE
George Nelson, of La Grande,
charged with failure to appear at
Enterprise for trial on a larceny
charge, was arrested hero Thursday
night by the state police and return
ed to Enterprise Friday.

A beer license at Hot Lake was
recommended to be granted yesterday
at the closing day's session of the
county court for July. Tills, in addi
tion to other routine maters and the
allowing oT bills, made up the busi

State Cancels
Cole's Permit
SALEM, July 7 VPii The public
utilities commission today cancelled
the permit of Donald F. Cole of La
Grande to operate as a contract car
rier. The commission stated that the
operations of Cole were contrary to
specifications of his permit.

Arctic Exploring

dalen College, Oxford, Is to carry on
tho name of Shackleton In polar ex
ptoratlon.
He Is Edward, 26-year-old son of
Sir Ernest Shackleton. whose exploits
were cut short 12 years ago by his
death while on the way to the Ant
arctic.
Sou Turns to North
Tho son is to seek his spurs, how
ever, in the opposite end of the earth
In little-known Ellcsmcre Land In
the Canadian Arctic.
An expedition which ho has or
ganised under the leadership of Dr.
Noel Humphrey's plans to leave Lon
don In July, sailing In a sealer char
tered by young Shackleton from Nor
way.
The Interior of Ellcsmcre Land Is
unexplored and the chief scientific
work of the expedition will be a geo
logical survey and mapping. Tho ex
plorers plan to winter in the region
and to devote next spring to northern
Ellesmere Land. They expect to be
away a year.
Shackleton, who Btrongly resem
bles his noted father In looks as well
as In Interests, Is piesldent of the
Oxford University Exploration club
under whoso auspices tho expedition
has been launched with tho support
of the Royal Geographical Society and
the Canadian government.
His principal Interest is exploring
and the walls of his room at college,
aro covered with pictures of Arctic
landscapes.

The last previous venture of the
club Was an exploration In Borneo
from July to December, 1032.
For several months Shackleton has
boon busy learning from polar experts
as much as ho could concerning Polar
equipment and conditions.
Ho has had conferences In Copen
hagen with Dr. Lauge Koch, veter
an Arctic explorer, and with the
Greenland board. In Oslo he talked
with Capt. Rllscr Larsen, famous
Arctic and Antarctic filer,
Ellesmere Land, to which tho ex
pcdttlon Is heading, next to Baffin
Land, is the largest of tho Canadian
Arctic archipelago, tho greater part
of which Is an Eskimo' reservation.
It Is like a deep saucer, with Us in
tcrlor lowlands flanked by coastal
mountains.

Patricia Cherrtngton must
serve a sentence of two years In Al
dcrson, W. Va., federal reformatory,
for harboring John DM linger and his
slain lieutenant. Tommy Carroll. She
pleaded guilty In U. S. district court
yeuterday.
Mrs. Cherrtngton was arrested ; In
Chicago three weeks ago. : '

Orande this evening from their home
at Hlllsboro. They will Join Mrs. Flak

Semi -Centennial U. P. celebration.
