PARIS Flowers from foreign
lnnds give an exotic touch to this
eeason'a costumes.
Chinese popples, Japanese wistaria
nnd hollyhocks, and bright Dutch
tulips appear on many new spring
dance frocks Instead of the gardenias
and roses which long have been fav
orites. Natural Blossoms
. One black, chiffon gown has a
waist-length cape covered with big
red poppies made of a sheer blistered
crepe, while a water green crepe gown
has a cluster of crimson poppies
splashed from the decollete to the
waistline.
The flowers sound a vogue for
"crinkled" blossoms rather than the
smooth petalled blooms. Lilacs, wis
tarla and field flowers are typical
ol the times, which favor, for after
noon and evening clothes, blossoms
which fall In soft lines and which
are copied directly from nature
rather than made in artificial pat
terns. ,
Flower Bracelets
Flower bracelets and headdresses
are made of the same small blooms
to wear with Bummer evening clothes.
The bracelets six Inches deep
are a multicolored mass of tiny blos
soms fashioned of organdy and vel
vet, while the headdresses are slen
der garlands worn Just above the
cluster of curls at the nape of the
neck.
Plowers are here on spring hats,
too. A little wreath of wild flowers
circle's under one side of- the brim
of a natural colored bengal straw, a
big rosy peony Is perched on the
back of a black straw beret,- and
two soft peach-hued popples are
clustered on the brim of an after
noon hat having a peach hued top

eastward to the Atlantic ocean across
a continent that probably never be
fore had seen a human being.
This is shown by a new map of
prehistoric migrations that were
sweeping slowly across what Is now
the United States when America was
unheard of and the more famous mi
grations of the old world were caus
ing empires them to topple, it has
Just been published by the Smithson
ian institution.
Most From Southwest
The hordes migrating from Pacific
to Atlantic, reversing the saying that
"westward the course of the empire
takes Its way,'-.were the ancestors of
the Indians found east of the Missis
sippi river by thjj first white settlers.
They opened up a country which un
til then, It Is believed, no man has
seen, and the transcontinental routes
they followed have Just been charted

All except (one of the Indian tribes
found by the white men between the
Atlantic and the Mississippi were
originally frofti the Jar southwest,
says Bushnell. They had pushed east
ward and northward slowly .through,
a period that lasted centuries or
perhaps thousands of years. The
great Algonqiiian tribes, met by the
French and Ehgllsh-"'hen they set
tled Canada, New England and the
North Atlantic seaboard, however,
had come In from the northwest.
Skirting the Great Lakes, the Al-
gonqulans were marching south, 'per
haps in search of ai milder home,
wheft they BfCTtfin incoming nvave'of
Slouan tribesmen from the south
west. They were pushed back, and
finally forced to settle In the com
paratively rigorous country of the
northeast.
The trails they followed from
ocean to ocean stretch backward
through distant ages around the
northern shores of the Pacific to Asia.
Most scientists now agree that Asiat
ic tribes crossed Bering strait, to
populate America. The trail has Ween
followed in many ancient iburlal
grounds and abandoned village sites
from Siberia down the Alaskan coast.

The region that now is Kentucky
and Tennessee was the great cross
roads of these ancient migrations
eastward, Bushnell believes. It play
ed a role In th ancient history of
North America much like that oJ Asia
Minor In the old world, which was
the Junction of many migrations In
the Mediterranean region.
The great Indian groups whose
migrations are traced on Bushnell's
map Include, besides the Algonqulans,
the Slouans who pushed them north
and occupied Virginia and the Caro
lines, the Iroquois, noted later as the
powerful "Six Nations," who moved
into the region around Lakes Erie
and Ontario, the Muskhogeans of the
guu states and the Caddoans, who
stayed west of the Mississippi,
