"Enkay" Milk
Product From
Modern Dairy
Tho N, K, West dairy ranch, north
of La Grande and west of Summer
vine where is produced "Enkay" milk
featured at the Safeway Stores school
of kitcheneering, la known over the
state, in fact over the northwest, as
one of the moat up-to-dato plants in
the matter of equipment and one of
the most eanitary as to arrangement,
care of the plant, of the animals and
of the milk Itself,
The largo dairy barn erected In 1031
consibta of three sections, so arranged
that a minimum of labor is required
with no retracing of steps In the im
mense volume of business carried on
here. These are the west wln which
is feed room, n clean, light and airy
room 34x64 feet: the milk shed, a
room 36 by 154 feet, having u capacity
for 80 head of cows, and the milk
room, or the east wing .also 34 by
64 feet.
Naturally tho milk shed and the
milk room are of first lmportanco to
the consumer of Enkay milk, although
the rest of the equipment Is inter
esting Including the two huge metal
silos each having a capacity of 100
tons of ensilago, this also produced
on the West ranch. In the milk shed,
the stanchions stand In two long
rows of 40-head capacity each, with
tho walkaway about two feet higher.
All the floors are of cement. The old
carrier system, used for bringing In
the feed and taking out tho litter has
been replaced by a system much more
sanitary and efficient. Twenty-five
drains in tho floor make it possible
to flush the litter out Into n septic
tank. There is a great abundance
of water piped Into tho dairy build
ing, for those familiar with the West
ranch know about tho myriad of
springs which furnish water and lots
ol It, the year around.
The milk room consists of several
compartment the receiving room, to
which the milk Is brought from tho
milk shed, then by elevator to the
cooling room and on through the re
frigeration room. Hero also are the
storage and bottling rooms. Tho Ice
plant has a capacity of two tons per
day. In these refrigeration rooms the
walls aro tightly covered with four

Error In Stories
On Price of Gas
PORTLAND, May 8 That recent
statements In news dispatches from
Salem have contulned errors In facts
as quoted In several instances that
prices of gasoline in Portland and
other parts or Oregon are higher than
they are In Washington and In Cali
fornia, iu set forth In a statement
issued by the Oregon Petroleum In
dustries committee and released here
by tho chairman of the district sub
committee. The committee is repre
sentative of the oil Industry In which
over $50,000,000 are Invested In tho
state and feels tliat considerable un
just criticism has been directed at
tho industry m a result of lack of
complete Information in several news
articles that have nppeared.
"It Is unfair to compare gasoline
prices In Oregon with those that
have resulted from a disastrous price
war In parts of Washington and Cali
fornia where gasoline In some cases
13 being sold below cost," reads the
statement. "Representatives of tho
entire Pacific coast gasoline refining
industry are now meeting with a
representative of Secretary Ickes, the
president's petroleum administrator.
In a serious attempt to stabilize the
price structure and prevent further
destructive price wars and at the
same time Inuuro a lair prlco to the
consumer," It Is declared.

Find Itself In
Red Buying- Gas
The Salem Capitol Journal, In
commenting editorially on the recent
purchase of state gasoline to bring
about "a cut in the retail price of
gasoline to the consumer," has the
following to say:
"It begins to look as though the
effort of the state board of control,
at the Instance or William Elnzlg to
lower the price of gasoline through
state purchase of giiuoUnc In other
stutes, would be a costly experiment
and result la considerable loss,
Mr. Einzig has purchased 30,000
gallons of first structure gasoline at
Tacoma at b'j cents a gallon f. o. b
Tacoma, about 2 cents a gallon lem
than the state now pays. The cost of
transportation and storage rests with '
tho s'-ate, and the state has no stor- j
ago facilities and to erect atorngc
tanks will involve a heavy invest
ment, not only for a central storage
tank, but one for each Institution.
When the state has added the cost of j
transportation, storage evaporation j
and leakage, it will probably find it- I

line from oil companies already es
tablished in Oregon. It cannot hope
to imndle it cheaper than the oil
concerns can. Tho 2 cents or so
saved by purchase in Tacoma. over
Salem delivery represents the added
cost in delivery and service. More
over the possible saving to the state
would not react In cutting price to
the auto owner. The state has had,
as a large consumer, the benefit of
low costs, but they have never reacted
to the benefit of the small consumer.
It Is surprising that the members
of the board of control, all good busi
ness mt'ii, should have off-handedly
endorsed the gasoline venture with
out thorough Investigation of the
casts Involved and the paisible prof
Its or losses."
