i2 -YEARS OK SPLENDID SERVICE
Colonel Ralph R. Huron, who yesterday completed 12 years
of service to his government and this community as post
master of La Grande, soon will retire from his federal posi
tion. And in stepping down from the post in which he has
served for more than a decade, ho will carry the best wishes
of the entire community. His has been a job well done, a
service splendidly performed and he leaves a fine record for
successors to seek to equal.
During his 'period in office, Colonel Huron has built up a
fine organization until today tie, La Grande post office is
listed 'among the most efficient in the northwest'. Many im
provements have taken place" in the last 12 years, and' most
of them found the postmaster directly responsible.
, As was to lie expected in view of the changing of the
administration from Republican" to Democratic, a successor
of the now majority party has been appointed,. Yesterday
the Word came over the Associated Press wires in the Obser
ver office that Victor Eckley, state representative from Union
county the' last two terms and a well known La Grande mer
cHant, had' been appointed-to succeed' Colonel' Huron. ..
With full knowledge that a change was to be made because,
of long'' honored political' practices';' the appointment of Rep.
Eckley" is very gratifying not only to Ii Grande people; but
to the county as a whole. A young man' with a splendid
record;' there is every reason to believe Hint the newly ap
pointed postmaster will continue the high type of service
the city is now enjoying, and will add new laurels to his
already long list of accomplishments in public and commurir
ity service.
