The speaker further asserted that
the public good requires that the
press be operated by newspaper men 1
who understand tho responsibilities
and ore permeated by the Ideals of
the craft. He rejoiced that excursions
Into newspaper ownership by finan
ciers, politicians and other outsiders
had been uniformly unsuccessful ana
said the adversities of the past few
years would tend to halt what might
otherwise have became another seri

pers by the estates of dead men, wno
would lack the virile energy which
he declared the newspaper owes to its
readers. ,
The Baker editor declared the
nowspaper should always be Influ
enced by Its readers, that It should
never be more powerful than they
are, that they shoul In prac
tice always find a way to aban
don any newspaper that failed ade
quately to serve them. He said oc
casional editorial demagoguery
pandering to sensationalism could
not be avoided so long as there were
readers who would be mislead by it
but that standards -were Improving.
The meat serious, evils In the news
paper craft are self -correcting, he as
serted, and added that the press has
risen to the greatest heights of pat
riotism and intelligent leadership In
Its history during the past year.
Through tho offices of Andrew
Loney Jr., school muslo supervisor, a
group of young women members of
the cast of "Jewels of the Desert"
presented two song numbers and a
dance that drew much applause.
