shone around Miss Mary Carlisle' as,
mirror In hand, she put the finishing
touches on her make-up before set
tling down to cloee her eyes In a
movie sleep. -. i , -. ,,
She was to sleep to wake, for
Lionel Barrymore, , playing her fa
ther, was to come In and say good
morning, bringing a present.
Mary, her face pink and white and
smooth, and each golden wave of
her alr lying In Its proper place,
tethored by a band of unruffled blue
ribbon, slipped the mirror under the
bedclothes and dropped . off to a
beautiful,' calm, coemetlcally-perfect
olnema slumber, .
It was the third or fourth take,
and she had been "dropping oft" for
about half an hour before.
Lionel Barrymore had taken his
place outside the door, and with the
call of "quiet everybody I Turn 'em
overl" he made his entrance .
The scene was well on Ita way
when suddenly it stopped. Someone
had noticed that a wisp of the Bar
rymore hair was standing up like a
coxcomb.
Mary doubled up with ' laughter.
"You soolled that one, Mr. Barry-
morel" and Lionel laughed while a
comb was applied. "I might get a
hair-cut," he volunteered.
They did the scene again.
They Say He's Uruff
All of which Is reported because
It effectively dissipates the myth
that Lionel Barrymore Is an old gruff
grumbler on tho sot-and because
It's an event when Lionel Barrymore
spoils a scene.
He haa done It before, and what
actor hasn't? But gruff? He was as
mild and pleasant and apologetic
about It as any screen novice. '

The private opinion is expressed
at NBA headquarters that the final
draft of the code either will not con
tain Section 8 or else It will be modi
fied drastically.
The Baltic and International Mari
time conference has expressed other
objections to the proposed code.
While non-American liner owners
anticipate the administration of the
code to be fair, It Is polnfedl out In
the same circular, "It Is not conceiv
able that there will be room within
the proposed code for non-American
tramp owners. j'
'On . the contrary, there - Is every
Justification for believing; the code
will have the effect of eliminating all
foreign tramp shipping in American
trade,"

Ruben Kirkland
Passes Today Of
Typhoid Fever
: Ruben Kirkland, young La Grande
man, died at the Orande Ronde hos
pital this morning of typhoid fever.
Funeral services will be held Wednes
day afternoon at 2 o'clock at the
Snodgrass and Zimmerman mortuary.
Burial Is to take place In the I. O. O.
F. cemetery.
Friends of Mr. Kirkland, a resident
of La Orande since he came here
with hla parents at the ago of one
year, wore shocked to hear of his
death. He was born In Tennessee
Apr. 0, 1006 and was 27 years, eight
months and 21 days old.
Survivors Include his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. James Kirkland: four broth
ers. Earl, Andrew. James Boy and
Chester; a sister, Mrs. Eugene Wheel
er, all of La Orande. besides other
relatives.
