AT' THE' LIBERTY'
CVVA MIGHT CONTINUE
" The tremendous program o the Civil. Works Administra
tion began as a sort of improvisation a happy thought, put
into-execution almost on-the spur of the moment, to take
as many-Americans as possible off relief roiis and provide,
regular- incomes for families.- that needed theiru Before we
get' tKi-ough. with it, it may develop easily into an elaborate
andi permanent, sot-up designed to take the place of unem-
- ployjirent- insurance and to cushion the nation against the
shocks-caused by sudden contractions of the industrial sys
tem. ' All' this is foreshadowed in a recent statement by;
IlajTy M., Hopkins, director of the C. W. A.
' 'Mri Hopkins points out that the experiment officially runs
: only to Feb. 15. Under it some 2,500,000' men are at work.
Plpbably no. one would propose seriously that the props, be
pulled, out fiom under these men in the middle of the winter.
Sheer1 force-of circumstances will compel' us to renew the
experiment and carry it at least into the spring.
N6r Is that all, Mr. Hopkins remarks: "It easily might lead to a scheme
. of uslng civil works as a device for permanently providing work on- Im
portant public projects for the unemployed. The country Is not going to
bo. disposed, kindly, to. unemployment Insurance, In terms of- men. going
UP to. o window to get a dole."
" And there- Is still another angle to it. The scheme enables: the. nation
tir accomplish a lot of Jobs which, ore almost, certain to go undone If left
,tt. private Initiative. The. work of the forest army.- Is a case In points
There are many slmllsr projects the drainage . of swamps, the establlslr
jmnt of health and recreolon centers, and so on.
Now It Is pretty clear that we ate going to need some far-reaching prd
'gram to take caro of unemployment, even after prosperity, returns. We'
'either can give the Jobless work to do, set up a regular unemployment
'Insurance system a dole. In plain English or go back to the old,,,
tunsatlsractory method of letting private charity take care of them.
One of these three Is going to be with us mora or less, permanently.
The civil works scheme seems to look very much like the best of the
j:three . alternatives; '
r
: John Barrymore, Helen Hayes, Clark
Gable, Lionel Barrymore, Robert
Montgomery and Myrna Loy form the
amazing?? strong multi-star cast
which interpret "Night Plight," the
new Me tro- Gold vy n -Mayer picture
opening Thursday at tlie Liberty the
atre.
The story is a terrifically powerful
tale of flying the mail by night In
South America. It was directed by a
man who holds a transport pilot's
license, Clarence Brown, It Is from
the pen of Antoln de Salnt-Exup-ery,
a pilot on the very line he writes
about.
Director Brown says of this tale,
" 'Night Flight Is the only real, truly
accurate, authentic and human air
plane story so far written."
The principal characters are John
Barrymore, stern, driving manager of
the air line; Clark Gable, pilot of
the storm-caught plane from Puntas
Arenas; Robert Montgomery, pilot of
a plane crossing towering mountains;
Helen Hayes, fear-ridden wife of Ga
ble; Lionel Barrymore, the lumber
ing Inspector of airplanes, and Myrna
Loy, wife of William Oargan, the pilot
of the plane, to Brazil.
It u. around' these players that a
highly dramatic plot centers.

A Real Advance in
Motor Car Engineering

f f 1
Oc Luxe Kordor Si'daiu One of eleven handsome new body types, all with V-8 cyhndef motor
Netv Dual Carburetion and Dual Intake Manifold add
to power and economy of the New Foyd V' 8 for 1934
LIKE a pair of lungs for tliis powerful
motor, this new system of enrburetion
and intake supplies vaporized gasoline
evenly to all eight cylinders. Two dis
tinct advantages result from it:
1. More even compression of fuel, Riving
Kill greater power, f nsler acceleration, quicker
surling and smoother performance in cold
weather.
2. More complete utilization of fuel, more
miles to the gallon of gasoline, with consr
qtient economy. Crankcase dilution is re
dticed to a minimum, thereby conserving oil
with still-further economy in operation.
Increased efficiency at less cost is a
notable achievement. Yet it is only one
of many improvements which distin
guish this new and greater Ford V-8
for 1934.
Clcar-rision Ventilation. Constant
Supply of Fresh Air without Drafts
or. Obstruction lo View
As perfected in the New Ford, this
system of ventilation operates efficiently
at all speeds, winter or summer.
In cold or stormy weather, the new
adjustable window ventilators can be
opened the desired amount to provide
fresh air. Individual control on front
door and rcar-quartcr windows enables
passengers to obtain desired ventilation
without causing discomfort to others.
Windshield and windows do not fog
when ventilators are opened.
In warm weather, the windshield
which opens and the cowl ventilator
provide additional fresh air.
Dual carburetion gives smoother oper
ation in all driving ranges from idling
to highest top speed
