Farm houses, built during the
- early history of Eastern Oregon, and
fields of ripe wheat extending to the
fnr lianxoR were the lures that drew
the-company making "Golden liar
vest," which plays Sunday and
Christmas day at the Liberty, to the
vicinity of; Pendleton during the
i nUddle of - the post summer where.
most of the scenes of this unusual
picture were filmed.
Richard Arlen, Cheater Mom. den.
evleve Tobln, Rosoo Atea. and other
' members of the cast spent over a
month on the ranches of Ike Chris
tophor and L. L. Rogers near Pendle
toir making- scenes fori this picture
of tile -wheat' farmers and their at
tempt! to brine the price of wheat
iluck to a profit paying Jevel. The
-, Christopher ranch . was homestcaded
In lB78-by lu present owner and ex
pandedto Its preuent proportions as
or of tht largest wheat ranches In
Oregon. .The L.. L. Rogers farm was
t tar ted in 1891' and now comprises
' over 3000 acre including ranch build
ings and wheat land.
The Intense summer heat of 110
degrees In the shade mode it not only
difficult, for tile actors, many of
whom had o wear heavy winter
clothing for winter scenes, but also
presented, a problem, to the sound
technicians working ' with the cast
near Pendleton. Sound in the ex
treme heat goes directly up, and so
after- much experimenting It was
found that microphones had to be
'placed directly over the actors.
When the movie company began
Hs- Work on the Christopher raiiuh
lost summer call for 100 extras was
tested, and over 1000 harvest hands,
ranchers, cowboys, aheepherders, and !
people from Pendleton's Idle class re- J
sponded to the call. One man from
La Grande was employed, but the In
tense heat praved too severe, and be
cause of his advanced age he suc
cumbed to sun-stroke after working
111 one of the winter scenes.
Members of the cast headed by
Menard Arlen and atnfr made up a
