MACK TRADES OFF
STAR PLAYERS IN
BIG PLAYER DEAL
By William Weekes
(Associated Press Sports Writer)
CIIICAUO, Dee, IS ! The lilKgest
baseball player deal ot them all was
In the bug today, anil the annual
major league meeting settled down
to regular business anil lesser swaps
and eules.
Connie Mack had disposed, as had
been reported he would, ot Lefty
drove, Rube Walberg, Mickey. Coch
rane, Oeorge Earnshaw and Max
Bishop, getting In return, around
$300,000 In cash, and Pitcher Bob
Kline and Inflelder Harold Warstler
from the Boston Red Sox, and Catcher
Charlie Berry from the Chicago White
Sox,
Boston got Orove, Walberg and
Bishop; Cochrane will manage De
troit, and Earnshaw will pitch for
Chicago. The White Sox lost a first
string catcher when Berry went, but
obtained In return, Johnny Pasek, a
receiver who figured In the Detrolt
Cochrane deal. The acquisition of
Orove, Walberg and Bishop promises
to make the Red Sox a real con
tender for the title next year, while
Detroit will be well-heeled for cat,
chers, with Cochrane end Ray Way
worth on the roster.
If he pitches as he did In 1920-30
and 31, Earnshaw will give Chicago
something they have lacked for sev j
eral years, a hurler who can be d-l
pended upon ta win a lot of games.
What Philadelphia got out of the '
oeai beside tno saoir.ouo, appears
much less concrete.
Mack's announcement almost com
pletely 'overshadows other bright bits
of news. Kenesaw Mountain LandJs 1
was signed to another seven-year con-
truct as baseball commissioner, and
William Harridge was given a flvc-j
year document as president, secre-
tary and treasurer of the Amerlaan1
league. t
The huge deal by no means ended '
the bartering. There were numerous
other negotiations on the fire. The
Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and St.
Louis were reported to be tangled Up
In a sizeable piece of business, while
tho Cincinnati Reds were said to be
after Catcher Bob O'Parrcll of the
Cardlnuls as playing manager. Cleve
land wanted Oscar Mellllo, St. Louis
Browns second baseman, but had
little hope of getting him. as Man
ager Rogers Hornsby wantedl Earl
Averill as St. Louis' share of the deal.
The Boston Braves were believed
angling for Klkl Cuyler, star out
fielder of the Chicago Cubs, as re
ports of a deal by which the Cubs
would trade Pitcher Pat Malone and i
Cuyler to Cincinnati for Chick Hafey '
fell through,
However, It was rumored that Pit-'
cher Malone Is for sale or trndo with
St. Louis or Pittsburgh angling for
him.

Maroon and White stock this year Is

Several games last year were loot by

team, with only three veterans from
last year on hand, and the problem
of developing .newj forwards and a
center, will be hard pressed to defeat
Union. As a matter of fact, the Bob

making no bones about It.
During the next two months

etoge. and Ae undoubtedly will use
