Mrs. ftalph Badgley
Is Speaker At
Neighborhood Club
Mrfl. Ralph Badgley, wife of the
professor of science at the Eastern
Oregon Normal school, and herself a
brilliant student of biology, discussed
"Biology, the Science of Life," yester
day afternoon before the La Grande
Neighborhood club. Musical numbers
were furnished by Miss Mary Eliza
Angel who sang "The Sweetest Flow
er that Grows," by Howley, and
"Rain," by Cur ran, accompanied toy
her sister, Miss Lily Belle Angel. The
latter Miss Angel played a piano solo,
"Prelude," by Stojowskl, and Mlse
Jean Williams presented two read
ings, "Philanthropy" and a one act
play skit.
Mrs. Badgley humanized the sub
ject of science and presented It In an
entertaining as well as an Instructive
way. ,
"Life may have been spontaneous
when In the primal pools of water,
containing carbon dioxide, the sun
sent Its rays and an electrical storm
caused the formation of the nitrites
and nitrates to add to the. necessary
components of life In the pools," she
said.
: Skulls, bones, caves and other evi
dences Illustrate the coming of early
man, she added. -'-
Development of the cell and here
dity, a subject which catches the I
common Interest, also were discussed.
Among humans, short thumbs, sev
eral finger, crooked little fingers,
color blindness, hemophilia and long
life eye color are known to be Inherited.
Mrs. Badgley also presented many
other new ideas which have been In
troduced Into the field of science.
Mrs. Jack Oliver
Entertains Club
THE NEWFANGLES
Mrs. Jack Oliver entertained the
Wakellta club Monday at Its weekly
meeting at her home. Mrs. James
Oneal was a guest and completed
three tables for bridge.
Mrs. Alvah Crowley received the
prize for high score and Mrs. Jamea
Oneal was second. The club will meet
next Monday afternoon with Mrs,
Joel Richardson.
Refreshments were served by the
hostess.

Women of Moose
To Stage Benefit
The Women of the'' Moose made
plans for a Christmas tree and bene
fit card party Tuesday night at a
meeting at the Eagles hall. Mrs.
Mary Feuerhelm presided over the
business meeting. V
The benefit card party will be held
Friday evening, Dee. 1, at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Sine.

Meets Saturday
Mt. 'Emily circle. Juveniles of the
Neighbors of Woodcraft will hold Its
monthly meeting Saturday, Dec. 2 at
2 o'clock at the home of the senior
guardian neighbor, Mrs. Anna Clower.
Names will be drawn for Christmas
presents which will be exchanged at
the Christmas program. Members also
are urged to bring the presents to
send to the Woodcraft home.
