'BUS FARES WILL
BE REDUCED ON
DECEMBER FIRST
The biggest single reduction ever
mncie in bus fares will go Into effect
Dec. 1, throughout the entire system
of Interstate Transit Lines and Union.
Pactflo Stages, according to the state
ment Issued today by E. J. Condon,
traffic manager. These drastic fore
cuts will affect all cities from Chicago
to Paclfia Coast points which are now
served by this bus system.
"These new fares are substantially
lower than have ever before been of
fered by a dependable travel com
pany," said Mr. Condon, "In some
cases reductions amount to as much
as SO per cent. The new reduced
rates apply both to local and trans
continental travel."
Mayors and civic bodies of the
cities served by Interstate Transit
Lines ano Union Pacific Stages have
voiced their enthusiastic approval of
the new fare reductions. It is felt
! that the new low fares will increase
the volume of travel from town to
town, as well as transcontinental
travel, thus benefitting merchants,
hotel men and shop keepers In cities

The lower fares will mean, no cur
tailment In the bus service now being
offered, according to Mr. Condon. In
terstate Transit Lines and Union
Paclflo Stages will continue to oper
ate under the conditions of the NBA,
having signed the bus code which
wins recently approved by President
Roosevelt.

ference. Admirals, past and present, and
politicians the latter, however, not
without an eye on the nation's bud

building up the British fleet. j

raised for the cause. Admiral Sir j
Ernie Chatfield, the first sea lord,
and Lord Beatty, war-time hero, who i
see in Britain's present position the i
need for action.
"The nation must take stock of its
defense position," says Sir Ernie Chat-
field, "and consider whether on its
present naval expenditure It is main-!
talnlng a naval strength, in accord- ;
once with its policy." j
Admiral Beatty goes further. De- j
scribing the navy as "the hand
maiden of our foreign policy," he 1
said to the Navy League: I
"Without a strong navy we are of
no use to anybody and we cannot
play our part as a great power."
Lord Beatty supports the move
ment for smaller but more battle
ships. "The United States wants larger
ships," he said. "The British Empire ;
wants many ships. Why? Because:
we have far greater responsibilities
on the sea than any other country." ,
He called the British acceptance
at the 1930 London naval conference
of 60 cruisers, on a parity with the
United States, a "grave and deplor
able blunder."
"It is not the parity with the
United States that I cavil at," he
said. "If she wants as many as we
do, why not? But the acceptance of
50 to do the work required! of 70 was
a grave and deplorable blunder."
He termed It "a matter of Interest
and grave concern" that the per
sonnel of the United States navy
represents a 60 per cent Increase
over 1014, that of Japan a 74 per cent
increase, while Britain has reduced
her personnel by 35 per cent, -
When this was announced in. par
liament recently there were cries of
"Shame!" from conservative benches.
Sir Ernie Chatfield, while stress
ing the necessity for a national stock
taking, nevertheless finds many
things In the British navy of which
he is proud.
The fuel consumption per horse
power hour, at full power, has been
reduced for all types of ships by ap
proximately one-third of that of war
designs, he says.
In the case of battleships and'
cruisers, the machinery weights have
been cut 20 to 30 per cent.
The destroyer "Acheron," fitted
achieved the feat of halving the fuel
consumption of Its war-time sisters,
tho lowest-of any steam-driven war
ship.
