Stage Successes
Are 'Plums' For
Movie Directors

HOLLYWOOD Extremely buo-
eessful stage plays usually are re
garded as "plums" far the movie di
me tor given the job of translating
, them Into screen form.
Ernst Lubltsch. who recently fin
ished "Design for Living," considers
the successful stage play the most
difficult to film.
Ho would rather direct from a
scenario written especialy for' pic
tures, because famous plays have
legions of admirers and each ad
mirer of a play is a potential cle
famer of Its film form If the picture
deviates ever so slightly from the
play.
And VQt dfroctors must bear In
mind that they are making pure mo
tion picture entertainment.
A 'Counterfeit Presentment
"In my experience," Lubitsch com
ments. "I never have observed a mo-
tlon picture photographed with an
I eye to absolute fidelity to stage form
which reached within a mile the
.quality of that play. The reason for
this Is that the screen Is an art form
In Itself related to stagecraft, true,
but by no means the same.
"With this In mind. I analyzed
'Design for. Living' before the Ben
Hecht script was written, and de
cided on an individual treatment
whlc preserves the plot and essence
of Noel Coward's drama and at the
- earn time affords an expression that
is t'dstinctly cinematic.
"A strictly photographed copy of
a stage play, regardless of how excel
lent It may be as such, is' to me a
second-rate, substitute for the ori
ginal, singularly void of Imagination
zest and creative ability of the picture-maker.
An Art In Itseir
"Since the screen Is an art form
In Itself. I see no reason for the
slightest concession.
"When, for instance, a playwright
dramatizes a novel, everybody grants
him the license to alter the form to
suit dramatic purposes. The some
privilege must bo reserved by the
motion picture director when he
transfers a stage play to the screen
with full intention of doing justice
to the original."
AH of which, no doubt, Is a longer
way of -saying that Herr Lubltsch
must put in those "Lubitsch Touches"
no matter what ho directs. And the
screen's "Design for Living" Is full
of them.

A fire of unknown origin started
about midnight Monday in a wood
shed back of Barney Hebrlck's con
fection shop. Prompt work on the
part of the fire department kept the
flames from spreading to the group of
frame buildings that would have
made a fire hard to combat.
Bishop James Kofford and his son
Kenneth left Sunday for Salt Lake
where the latter was to be married
to Florence Summers of Grand Junc
tion. Colo. The wedding took place
at the L. D, S. temple Wednesday and
the young couple will return to Union
Friday night. A group of friends will
give them a miscellaneous shower at
the home of Vernon DeGraw Satur
day evening. They will leave Mon
day for Portland where they will
make their home for the present.
Leslie Reutcr returned home Thurs
day from three years of service with
the marines at Schofield Barracks in
Hawaii. He plans to remain with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene
Reutcr until after the holidays and
then will re-enlist.
Mrs. T. Cock entertained the mem
bers of the "Lucky 13" at 1 o'clock
luncheon Friday followed by an af
ternoon of bridge. Mrs. Ray Coles won
first prize and Mrs. Lew Bidder the
consolation.
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Miller returned
to their home at Dufur, Oregon, Wed
nesday. Chas. Adams who Is recover
ing from pneumonia, went with them
and will make his home with his
daughter, Mrs, Miller. He rented his
) home . here to Mr. and Mrs. James
Moore of the Safeway Store.
Mr. and Mrs. Clerk Martens en
tertained the Pinochle club Thursday
evening. Four tables were at play
and high scores were made by Mrs.
Rex Griggs and Ab Glpson and low
by Mrs. Ab Glpson. The hostess
served a lunch during- the evening.
Mis. George Chamberlain returned
home Tuesday after visiting a few
days with Mrs. Pat Powers at Medi
cal Springs.

"Wednesday. He attempted to dis
lodge some dried weeds in front of
tho plow while tho tractor was in
motion. His foot became entangled
and the plow share hit it, cutting a
gash which required several stitches

The girls volleyball team won. from
tho Union team, three gamen out of
three, at the Oove gym. As the Cove
team scored against Imblor both on
the Imbler floor and here, another
victory against Union would give
them the championship as the three
schools aro the only ones with volley
'ball' teams this year.

in honor of Alvin Orton, who oele
' orated his birthday Friday. The re
freshments were furnished by the
guests, Mrs. Stuart French, Mrs. Syl

authorities for an Impromptu scene
he staged on a hotel balcony, was
