"The Rag Carpet Bee" Staged
Last Night At Presbyterian
Church Before Large Audience
A homely story giving rise to mlr
ithlul situations furnished a vehicle
for a group of women who carried
their rolea convincingly In "The Rag
Carpet Bee," a play In one aot by
Elizabeth Gale, presented last night
at the Presbyterian church. A musi
cal program was presented In con
junction with the play before a large
audience.
The cast of the play included Mrs.
Miles Fallows, Mrs, Joel Richardson,
Mrs. Chris Miller, Mrs. Clyde Webb,
Mrs. George Richardson, Mrs. J. P.
Morelock, Mrs. L. B. Moe, Helen Gene
Webb and Mrs. I. C. Bowser. During
the play Mrs. Richardson and Mrs.
Morelock sang "Carry Me Back to Old
Vlrgtny."

gan numbers, . "Minuet," "Home
Sweet Home" and "Drink To Me Only
With Thine Eyes," by Mrs. Harley
Richardson. E. E. Hurley, tenor, sang
"The Quilting Party," by Rosey, and
"Love's Old Sweet Song," by Molloy.
Mrs. A. K. Parker sang "The Sec
ond Minuet," by Be&ly. and "Grand
ma," by Sachs. Dick Lindsay played
the offertory on the violin.
Mrs. Morelock was chairman of the
play committee. Miss Miriam Hanna
Urected the play, and Mrs. Harley
Richardson, played the pipe organ se
lections throughout the evening.
Furniture was furnished by several
townspeople as were antique pieces.
A clock mode in 1866 was furnished
by the public library; Mrs. Harriett
MacDonald furnished a melodion arid
settee which are about 100 years old;
Including other old pieces, candle
sticks, antique chairs from Mrs. J. C.
Gulling.
Mrs. George Richardson wore the
wedding costume which has been a
possession of her family for several
years.
Gabriel Cup On
Display at Meeting

schools of La Grande for the largest

Mrs. Fred Read reported on the re
cent meeting of the council at Island
City. Mrs. Paul Cook, delegate to the
state meeting, told of her visit to the
elementary and secondary schools in
Salem.
Mrs. N. W. Frees, president of the
city council, spoke on the Import
ance of the state booklet and also
dlscussedi resolutions. The city coun
cil decided to endorse the NRA code
for motion pictures.
Miss Kate Houx was appointed on
a committee to consider the emer
gency that exists In the educational
system, threatening the life of the
public schools and to encourage legis
lation that will give emergency relief
to the schools that might otherwise
be forced to close and also look for
ward to partial state assistance of
elementary and secondary schools as
an offset to local property tax. Other
members of that committee are Mrs.
Herbert Evans, principals of the
schools and presidents of the local
associations.
Mrs. Evans, chairman of the study
circle, announced a study plan, the
neighborhood plan, that will be used.
Each association Is divided into four
groups and each will meet for four
weeks. The fifth meeting will be a
combined one of all the groups.
November is child welfare month
and was discussed by Mrs. O. B. Max-
am. She also stated that a standard
association of over 100 members
must take 10 of the magazines and
with less than 100. only five.
Mrs. Isaac Sharer, president of the
county council, displayed the poster
that won second! place at the state
convention.
A meeting was called at 7:30 o'clock
tonight at the Sacajawea Inn of the
groups that will canvass the district
in the Red Cross drive, led by Mrs.
L. A. Kennedy. ,Miss Alida Blgelow,
field worker for the Red Cross, will
be present tonight.
Dec. 4 is the date of the next meet
ing. ... -
Eastern Star ,
Meets Tomorrow
Special work will be put on at the
meeting of the Eastern Star tomorrow
evening at the Masonic hall. A social
hour will follow the ritualistic work.

Talk at Meeting
Miss Kate Houx, director of train
ing at the Eastern Oregon Normal
school, will apeak to the primary
education council In Baker on
the subject, "Current Heading For
Adults." Miss Houx will give re
views of .books and plays. The In
formal 'talk will foe given tonight in
Baker.
