: The "squaring off" process, as It Is
called 1 in the navy, - was rather a
strenuous event, - according ' to Mr.
Hannofleld.
"Wo slept on cots the -first night,"
he adds, "and next morning were
taken toi the dispensary, for ,0, stiff
physical exam. The ones who passed
that, were given n hair (what a hair
cut ).. and were Issued uniforms. A11
the 'clothing they Issued us was wad-
. dded up and thrown In a mattress
cover. The next day we spent the
wholo -time -from 8 o'clock In the
morning until slxthat night learning
to roll our clothes In the good old
navy fashion."
The hammacks In which they sleep
were also quite a problem, according
to -tile new sailor. They are slung six
feet above tho cement deck and must
be drawn up tight. The first night
two men fell out but the only casu
alty was a cut eye.
The recruits have to wash their
-own "whites" and that seems to be
the only complaint that Mr. Hanne
.flcld has to make.
"All this talk about beans in the
navy is the bunk," -he adds. "Tho
food Is good, nothing fancy, but they
-do have salads and dessert while on
Sunday they have chicken or turkey.

With such a varied routine during
the day Mr. Hannelleld writes that It
"seems as If we do a lot of clothes
changing In the navy." From 7 o'clock
in tho morning until 9:30 in tho eve
ning when taps Is sounded the sail
ors spend the day cleaning, polishing
brass, washing their clothes, witn 'rec
reation after dinner In the evening.
After Mr. Hannofleld had been
there a few days he found why every
thing, looked so clean. "It 'takes Jots
or elbow- grease" he louna.
Mr. Hannef lcld Is at present In the
detention, or quarantine camp, where
the recruits are sent when they first
enter the navy.
