A SUGGESTION TO THE GAME COMMISSION
The elk and deer seasons in Eastern Oregon ended Wed
nesday night, but the hunters are still carting in carcasses
, and the forests have been thinned of their fleet-footed
' animals.
Ideal weather and the lure of the great elk combined to
bring thousands of nimrods into the hiiis of Union, Wallowa,
Baker and Umatilla counties. And there was slaughter!
It has been many, many years since so many hunters
joined in a concerted effort to bring home the "bacon" and
they were successful. In some sections of Eastern Oregon
i where elk were plentiful a few days ago, there is scarcely a
! bull elk left. A few escaped here and there, but it will
be many years before the big herds of other yeai-s have
returned to former numbers.
More deer than usual were killed these last three days,
also, and it is safe to 'say at least local sportsmen are
saying it that deer hunting will not be good for several
years. ,
We are not particularly criticizing the game department
and legislature for declaring an open season on elk in this
section. Perhaps, however, a suggestion might be made.
It is this don't open the elk season in Eastern Oregon for
;j another long period of time and don't open both seasons at
j the same time. Another open season like this one, and bie
game hunting would be a thing of the past in this section.
I , In years to come if another open season on elk is desired
! would it not be wise to let the license be so high for both
' out-of-state and out-of-Easlern Oregon hunters that there
will not be such a tremendous rush to the hills. If the state
is going to be mercenary about hunting elk at all, let it go
far enough to make it pay when the books are balanced. It
surely didn't pay this year!
