WASHINGTON VF A tax on
I floor stocks of porlc and port pro
ducts held by meat processors and
wholesaler will go Into effect Nov
ember 8. the same day the new pro
cessing tax on hogs anil be levied to
finance the farm administration's
, gigantic hog-corn production control
; program.
It was reported that packers, who
protested the eventual tax rate ol M
per 100 pounds on hogs lire weight,
won a victory through agreement of
administrators that the tax at the
start will be 60 cents per hundred
weight. The packers contended their floor
stocks are high. It Is estimated that
present storage supplies amount to
about 800.000,000 pounds.
Increase Rate Gradually
If the tax at the beginning had
been S3 the levy on floor stocks would
have been four times as high. Under
present plans the 50 cent rate will
remain In effect for at least SO days,
then Increased gradually, reaching
the maximum of 3 February 1.
The tax on floor stocks will be
higher than that for hogs 11 re weight.
The fsrm administration Is near an
end of a study through which the
conversion factor will be established.
It Is generally estimated that after
being processed, about 70 per cent of
the 11 re weight of hogs is represented
by a finished edible product, and the
floor tax will be levied on the latter.
As a result the floor tax may be
about 30 per cent higher than the tax
on hogs Uveweight. -
The conversion factor establishes
the relationship betwen the value of
a pound of live, animal to a pound
of finished product. j
It Is estimated the floor stock tax
will yield about i,000.000.
The method of collecting the tax
will be the same aa for cotton and
wheat and will be In the hands of
the Internal revenue bureau.
Secretary Wallace has disclosed that
he has assigned aides to make a care
ful study of a plan to levy a com
pensating processing tax on all sugar.
the proceeds of which would be used j
u psy oonusrs to aamesxic cane ana
beet producers.

ITS NEW VIRGINIA LAW
RICHMOND. Va. Hardy pio
neers who settled the Virginia wil
derness would find their style
cramped In this day and time, for
they couldn't trap raccoons.
The state cocnmlssion of game and
Inland flshenea has ruled that snar
ing of that elusive animal will be
illegal for the next fire years. The
step was taken to protect the breed
from extinction.
The regulation dees not prohibit
hunting raccoons with dogs.
