ACCOMPLISH MUCH
IN EAST OREGON

BAKER, Ore. (Special) A luce
amount of work has been completed
by the civilian conservation corps on
the Whitman forest during the
monthly progress report of the forest
service.
The work Includes , erection of 36
miles of telephone line, construction
of 67 miles of roads, clearance and
development of 45 acres of land for
use of the publlo as recreational
campgrounds, construction of 12
miles of sheep driveways, and treat
ment of 36,000 acres of land with
poison bait for squirrels and gophers.
Many Building Erected I
In addition the O. O. O. workers
liave completed or nearly completed (
a large ' number of lookout houses, ,
towers, guard cabins, barns, garages
and other small buildings up to date.
A recent Inspection by Supervisor
W. L. Dutton of the Whitman na-
itlonal forest, coupled with plans of i
the army for breaking up the O. O. .
C. camps, Indicate that very soon the
forest service will switch from emerg- j
ency conservation work ito projects to
be handled under the publlo works
program. j
The forest service has been ready .
with plans for sevorol weeks to In-,
mate projects under the public works 1
program, but delay In release of funds j
has prevented It from starting the
work until this week, but the forest.
service Is bending every effort to
take advantage of the few remaining
weeks this field season to give as
much work as possible to men In all
communities adjacent to the Whlt
rwm forest, Mr. Dutton said.
Approximately 100 men are now
iworklng in small crews In scattered
localities on drift fences, water de
velopment projects, small 'buildings
and pack trails.
8 Forest Road Projects Up
As soon as the O. O. C. camps are
abandoned about the middle of this
month, the forest service plans to
utilize some of the equipment now
In use In these camps to begin work
on three forest road projects located
on Eagle creek near Richland, on 'Mio
south forki of Burnt river near Unity,
and one near Huckleberry mountain
to complete the Sumpter-Austln road
project worked on tills season by tho
C O. O, forces.
The distance from Baker to John
Day by tills route Is 81 miles as com
pared to 101 miles by the Dooley
mountain road. The road Is of a high
er standard than ordinary forest road
as it was built on a bureau of public
roads survey and con be widened
without loss of grade and can bo
brought up to highway standards
without sacrificing construction.

The first game of the football sea
son, played at Baker Friday afternoon,
was a victory for tho Union team.
They played Baker's second team and
neither team showed very good team
work. Howevor, Coach Campbell Is
looking forward to a much more suo
oessful season thts year than last ns
ho has better material to work with.
The Une-up for Friday's game was:

at the hall Monday evening for a Joint
social evening. An Interesting pro

musical numbers and a most humor
ous skit, "The Initiation Into the
Queen of Sliebo Order." Following the
program tho evening was spent In
curds and other names. Eastern 8tar
members will be guests of tho Baker
Star chnpter Monday evening.
