ENGINEERS HERE
FOR INSPECTION
Four fire prevention engineers ar
rived in La Grande yesierday for spe
cial Intensive Inspection work of puD
llo and business properties. Special
attention will be given the elimina
tion ot hazards that cause fire In
the schools and other public places
where people, particularly children,
gather In largo numbers.
The work Is In charge of O, M.
Thurber, manager of the publlo re
lations department of the General
and First National Insurance Com

are Charles Parker, William Hooper
and Reese Lewis. They have been
brought here as a special service to

La Grande has had Its share of

protection problems. A continued fa

annually to our people, according to
Mr. Reynolds. The special work now
being done by those engineers Is for
the purposo qf assisting and estab
lishing yrays and means for the con
tinued favorable record and assuring
future savings In Insurance costs.
Yesterday Mr. Thurber addressed
the Rotary club during the noon
luncheon at the La Grande hotel.
His subject was ''Indirect Taxes." He

panies did not pay losses, but Instead
the Insuring public pays every cent
for every loss that occurs in a com
munity. This Is done through, the
Indirect taxation collectecVln the way
of premiums by the Insurance com
panies. Just ,what those Indirect
taxes '.will be . Is determined by the
people of the city themselves.
He explained how lutes were made
and stated -that .every hazard existing

and other bulldlngB, he said.
By the end of this week Mr. Thur
ber and his assistants expect to cause
the removal of hundreds of such haz
ards In La Grande. If thlB Is done Mr.
Reynolds Is due a lot of appreciation
for his services in bringing ithese pre
vention engineers. o. our .city,, it Is
pointed out.
While here Mr. Thurber will give
talks on fire prevention and traffic
safety to the students of tlie High
school and all grade schools In an
effort to arouse the Interest of the
children and young people In carry
ing fire prevention Into the homes.
That this is an essential problem Is
proved by the tact that a fire occurs
in an American home every four min
utes of every day of every year and
two thirds of the loss In life by fire
Is in the homes and caused through
hazards that should not have existed.
