Sleeping Disease
Epidemic Now On
Wane In St. Loiiis
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 21 A con'
tinued decline In the number of
deaths and now . cases reported
strengthened the belief of scientists
today that the "sleeping sickness"
epidemic Is definitely on the wane
In, greater St. Louis.
During 24 hours, only three deaths
and 22 new cases were roported. This
brought the death toll to 169 since
the outbreak of the epidemic In mid-
July.
Virtually certain that they have
established and carried on encephali
tis in monkeys, research scientists
were seeking to determine how the
mysterious disease is hprcad. The
general theory amorg meilleal ex
perts was that encephalitis Is trans
mitted by means of nose and throat
secretions. If monkc.l develop sleep
ing sickness after the secretions
have been admlnlstehl them, scien
tists consider they lit 1-. have estab
lished the means of transmission, of
vital Importance before inrumj ir
other means of Imm mlM'.lon inny bo
developed.
